A couple days ago at work someone asked me about how to use blocks in yoga. I quickly rattled off a some answers and then went back to eating my lunch.
Days later I was still thinking about all the ways I’ve used blocks in yoga. Check out the HuggerMugger (yes, I still love that name!) chart above for some ideas.
WAYS TO USE A BLOCK:
- To make my arms longer in Triangle, its evil cousin Revolved Triangle, Half Moon and Side Crane/Crow.
- I’ve stood on blocks too make my legs longer in King Dancer.
- I’ve stood on blocks to help me balance more evenly in Crow.
- I’ve “massaged” my IT band (Ouch! I’d recommend the foam roller for this)
- I’ve “massaged” my feet, calves, and hamstrings (Again, ouch. It’s like Thai massage – or self-induced accupressure).
- I’ve used a block in Warrior 2 and lunge – put it between my knee and the wall for balance.
- I’ve used a block to strengthen my upper body for inversions like forearm balance and dolphin.
- To give myself a lift in Bridge
- I’ve used blocks to support my knees in Supta Baddha Konasana and Sukhasana
- I’ve sat on blocks in Hero
- I even use blocks in Savasana. Well, if I put a bolster under my knees, I put my feet on blocks. So comfortable!
