Don’t Take It Personally and Other New {School} Year Resolutions

New years just beg for resolutions in my opinion. Since my brain works on the school year calendar, new years start in the fall. By January I’m all resolutioned out.

Last {working} school year, my mantra/resolution/intention was to Not Take It Personally. This pretty much changed everything about my life.

In my quest to not take things personally, I managed to listen more than I talked, I quieted down, really listened and let other people be the expert (pretty major for a know-it-all like me) and I let go of things that weren’t working for me.

Work relationships got easier, parent interactions (something I struggled with in the past) were more clear, professional and well, easier.  Even my personal life felt lighter and more fun.

Since school just started in this house, I’ve been recently thinking about what my intention for this school year will be. I know I’m not in the classroom, so why have one? To be honest, since I’ve started having an intention for the school year my professional life has greatly improved in the areas where I put my focus. Plus  I’m already thinking about next school year and I’m getting a bit anxious.

Where will I be teaching?

What will I be teaching?

Who will I be teaching?

Will I secure a job share?

Where will Ruby spend her time while I’m at work?

See what I mean? So many unanswered questions with so many possible answers. So many, in fact, I’m not quite sure how to wrap my brain around all the possibilities and all these loose ends are already making me tighten and grasp and grab at answers. I don’t know about you, but I’m sure my best decisions are not made while totally stressing about the outcome.

So, what’s a teacher/planner/mama/not-so-secret-control-freak to do?

I’ve decided my intention for this school year is to say yes.

For me,

  • Saying yes means I am open to all the possibilities, even the ones I am not sure exist yet.
  • Saying yes, means not having to know right now what will happen next school year (or even next week).
  • Saying yes means not getting mired in the details and letting the unknown suck the fun out of life right now.
  • Saying yes means finding ease instead of grabbing, grasping and holding.


So, friends, how do you handle the big unknowns in your life?

Do you make resolutions or set intentions during times of transitions?

Do you have any words of wisdom for a current stay-at-home-mama needing to send her bebe to childcare in the relatively near future?

11 Things For 2011

December 11th’s Prompt:

What are 11 things your life doesn’t need in 2011?

How will you go about eliminating them?

How will getting rid of these 11 things change your life?


1. Cable TV. One phone call and we’re free! Or at least that’s how I hope it works.

How will it change my life? Saving money and not falling into the I’ll-just-turn-it-on-for-a-minute trap.

2. My subscription to Yoga Journal. Just letting it run its course.

How will it change my life? I’ll get my yoga writing from blogs like Michelle’s, Madeleine’s, Kim’s… and I’ll stop wondering why I keep subscribing to a magazine I don’t have much in common with.

3. More books and clothes – can’t wait until the next swaps.

How will it change my life? Saving a ton of money on new-to-me clothes and books and I’ve got an outlet for my stuff I no longer need. Spring SwapAsana anyone?

4. Sugar, dairy and bread { just for a month!}

How will it change my life? I’m not sure other than I’ll have to be more mindful about what I am eating. Want to join me? {then click workshops}

5. Screen time after 8:30 pm – a girl has got to read books.

How will it change my life? I’ll sleep better and get through my huge stack of library books faster.

6. Clutter10 things at a time.

How will it change my life? Getting rid of stuff I don’t need will make room for what I do. Plus knowing I don’t have to do it all at once will take the overwhelm out of the job.

7. Signing up for e-courses – I think I’ll finish 2010’s.

How will it change my life? Less guilt about spending and not using.

8. My sedentary ways. Consistent cardio here I come!

How will it change my life? It will help keep moodiness at bay and maybe even help my trousers fit better.

9. Taking it personally. {A 2010 resolution that needs repeating. –Daily.}

How will it change my life? I won’t be so shaken and stirred by other people’s opinions of me.

10. Guilt about housecleaning – we’ve asked for help.

How will it change my life? More time to focus on projects and fun.

How will it change my life? How won’t it?

Yoga+Music365 (day2) – Furr by Blitzen Trapper

I feel so very virtuous! I practiced yoga all by myself at home for 45 minutes and it didn’t feel like a chore, weird, lonely or anything else negative. I also didn’t feel awkward or fumble around for what to do next (all of which has happened in the past).

This is a huge deal for me because I’ve been so spoiled by finding such amazing teachers in Sacramento. It’s All Yoga has an embarrassment of riches in this way and by working the front desk, I get all the free yoga I can do.

But let’s be honest, sometimes classes don’t fit into your schedule or you just can’t be bothered to get all the way dressed or your hair just isn’t public ready and so you’ve got to do your own practice at home. Believe me, I know it sounds crazy and like a big hassle. And honestly when others do such a great job teaching why should I do it for myself?

All that being said, not everyone knows where to start a home practice. Since I totally have been resisting doing one even though it was a requirement in my yoga teacher training, I figure I should share what is making it possible for me.

1. I’ve got some sequences written just for me by my yoga study buddy Erin. She rocks and is one of the people teaching free Fridays at 4:30 at It’s All Yoga, so if you are lucky enough to go when she’s teaching, she’ll love you up too. I’ll share her magic sequence from today.

2. I have a yoga mat that is so squishy and sticky and yummy it begs me to use it. Long story short, I’ve been test driving a Jade Harmony Professional mat over the last few months at the studio. The company is on Facebook and Twitter and they like to give stuff away. Jade sent me a teacher demo blemished mat in Sedona Red (and I was supposed to give it to my husband but,)  I love its blemish.  In fact, I think it’s little hiccup stripe makes it even more beautiful.

PS – I love social media and have won so much stuff on Facebook and Twitter that now I think of it as the magic universe.

This is the last of the Best of 2009 Blog Challenge. I finished 16 out of 31 prompts. Not too shabby considering I found this challenge on December 27th!  Here’s to better planning next year.

Taking the time to reflect on the past year in this way has helped me see what a great year it was. I blame all of you for that!

December 31 Resolution you wish you’d stuck with. (You know, there’s always next year…)

I’m not a big resolution maker. At least not a public one. I, like most people, failed to keep them year after year, so I eventually stopped making them.

Until last year.

By the end of December last year, I’d had a really good run of consistent yoga classes and I was feeling amazing. I decided that I would try to do some yoga every day in January. I figured I would start small – just a month – to see how it went. I made a spread sheet to keep track of my progress and did pretty well for the first few weeks until I got a virus,  broke my resolution and abandoned the project.

The second part of my secret non-resolution project was a bit more successful. After years of spending all my music hours almost exclusively on The Old97’s and Rhett Miller solo albums (Best Night Out and Best Album of 2009 – oh look! 2 more prompts just answered!), I decided to use January to expand my musical horizons.

During my Old97’s fast I listened to a new album a day. New didn’t necessarily mean newly released, it meant a different album everyday in January. I made it farther than with the yoga, however I still didn’t manage new music everyday.

This year, I’ve decided to try both these projects again(without the 97s fast!), but this time for the whole year.

In 2010, I am going to do some sort of  yoga and listen to new music everyday.

Sometimes I get stuck in a rut and I’m counting on all of you to help me diversify.
