School is out for summer and what that really means for teachers is figuring out what we’re going to do with our classes next year. Since I started blogging with my students this year, several people have asked me for help setting up blogs for their students.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks to student blogging is just getting started. When my class set of netbooks finally arrived in late Fall, I went directly to Twitter my – PLN {personal learning network} – for help on how to get started.

{Did I mention Twitter and how ridiculously helpful the teachers on it are? Read this post Dear Teacher Who Isn’t On Twitter.}

I’m not going to lie, my biggest concern was not doing it “right” and now that I’ve had some experience, there is no right way. Just get started. Reading these links is an excellent way to get the nuts and bolts taken care of.

My Best Of…

Mrs. Ripp has written a number of helpful posts on student blogging. My favorite post, 14 Steps to Meaningful Student Blogging, includes internet safety links, lesson ideas for teaching them how to comment and write posts on paper first as well as how to get comments for your student writers. These posts were my bible in getting started and feeling confident – I highly recommend using her lessons.

One of Mrs. Ripp’s blogging tips is connecting your class with another. Here is her class blog , check it out and leave a comment or two.

What Makes A Great Blog Post – a link that came to me – 3 minutes after asking for help on student blogging this morning.

Not sure what to have your students post about? TeachFactory’s Getting Students Blogging! Students CAN do it! has some great ideas.

Pictures truly are worth a 1,000 words, but where does one find royalty free use pictures for student posts? Creating Lifelong Learners has the answer!

Celebrate National Library Week! Books I Love: Good Enough is the New Perfect: Finding Happiness and Success in Modern Motherhood

Here at TGBTS, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this book. For years, I’ve been curious about working mothers and how they do it all. It turns out the answer depends on the woman.

While not yet a mother, I am a woman born between 1965 and 1980 looking for greater happiness and balance between work and home.

Are you?

If so, you need to read this book. It’s written for women just like us.

Hollee and Becky surveyed more than 900 women and conducted in-depth interviews with over 100 of them about their thoughts on working and parenting. This book is the result of their research as well as expert research on marriage, feminism and business. Hollee and Becky’s personal stories are intertwined throughout the chapters.

The unexpected twist? For me, it reads like part my own personal history book (my neck hurts from nodding my head in agreement) and part yoga book.

Yoga?

Yep, possibly an unintended consequence, but I kept thinking about my own yoga practice of self-compassion, kindness and letting go while I was reading this book.

Some examples of the yoga in Good Enough is the New Perfect:

You can do anything – this doesn’t mean you have to do everything. 

(Yoga translation: What does your body need in this moment?)

Delegate: say no.

(Yoga translation: Did someone say pull up a bolster and rest?)

Knowing when to move on means knowing yourself; the answer is different for each of us.

(Yoga translation: there is no right way to do a pose).

Consider your history when making your choices – but don’t let guilt or other women’s choices dictate your own.

(Yoga translation: Keep your eyes on your own mat. Who cares what is happening on the mat next to yours?)

There’s nothing wrong with “easy” – just because something is hard doesn’t mean it’s more valuable.

(Yoga translation: fancy side arm balances don’t make you a better person, or yogi)

My Best Of…

Hollee over at The New Perfect talks about how she hates blogging because she feels every post must be perfect (holla). She also admits she may have a tiny author crush on our favorite TED talk (researcher) storyteller,  Brene Brown who wrote a new book called  The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are.

I’d love to start a book club with this book. Are you interested?

Monday marks the 100th day of school for me which means 80 more until summer break! J and I are already talking about taking a trip this summer to….. wait for it…… San Francisco!

We grew up across the Bay from the City and now even though we live within 2 hours, we’ve never spent a proper holiday there. When we travel to SF, we do our thing and return either to the East Bay for a slumber party with friends or overnight with his mom or drive all the way back to Sacramento to sleep in our own bed.

Not this time! We’ve decided it is time to take the plunge and stay a few days in The City and play tourist.

Curvy Girls Unite!

I love, love, love Frocks and Frou Frou and this post Breaking the Rules knocks it out of the park. Lilly, the model and author behind this inspiring fashion blog, takes on the fashion do’s and don’ts.

Yoga Journal is holding a cover model talent search. Anna, the brilliant mind behind Curvy Yoga, is advocating that all the curvy yoga peeps submit their pictures for consideration. She’s taking it a step further and is asking for photos for an upcoming post featuring all the curvy folks in their favorite poses.

Wouldn’t you love to see more realistic body shapes on the cover of Yoga Journal?

I am totally in.

Cleanse update:  It’s OVER!

Please don’t think I am going to return to my earlier ways. At least not all of them – I feel too good to go back now. I learned a lot this month:

I am, indeed, gluten intolerant.  Rice substitutes are quite delicious and fairly easily available so I’ll keep those.

Dairy has been on my mind for a month and I am hoping to have a smooth reintroduction. Visions of gulping a gallon of milk while holding a fist full of cheese have been dancing around in my head for a while, but I think I’ll take it slow. I would hate to over do it.

Cleanse-worthy dishes are quite delicious. All it takes it some planning, shopping, chopping and applying heat before you eat. Keeping in mind this is an act of self-care/love will help keep that in perspective.
