focus

tasting ::   frosted mini-wheats with rice milk, peanut butter on apples, blueberries and white nectarines in vanilla coconut yogurt, salted peanut butter stuffed pretzels,  creamy garlic vegan pasta with sautéed zucchini and homegrown tomatoes,

hearing ::   darren rowse talk about dreams from the world domination summit. {i very much would like to go to this conference next year}.

smelling ::  coffee. i’ve been working and meeting in wonderful cafes this week and even though i don’t drink coffee, i smell like coffee. i’m starting to associate the smell with productivity.

seeing ::   connections being reconnected. friends from high school – one on one and talking about stuff that really matters: home, life, dreams. talking to people from the way back is super comforting and inspiring at the same time. also, a whole lot of house of cards – watched half a season in one day!

feeling ::   more at ease and super excited.  the two-year old got a hold of some calming balm magic and has way mellowed out this week. the healthy, happy, sane teacher is now international – one of our registrants is from the netherlands! friends, our message of teachers claiming their self-care is spreading.  join us?

wishing/hoping ::  for more registrations to roll in (early bird pricing ends 8/9) and to keep enjoying what is left of summer break.

good

tasting ::   fried tofu bun (chilled vermicelli salad), bbq chips x a million, green smoothies, lemon orzo with cucumbers and feta, summer vegetables wrapped in wheat corn tortillas, plums, white nectarines, watermelon, popsicles, vegan pizza on cornmeal crust, rice chex with rice milk, grilled chicken burrito with avocado + local tomatoes.

hearing ::  myself yelling at my kid and then beating myself up about it. {tough week all around and then it got SO MUCH BETTER}. also old97s live hitchhike to rhome. you can too! download it here.

smelling ::  chlorine on my arms from all the pool time.

seeing ::   faces i love on the computer screen. why did none tell me of the magic of skype? or was i not listening? dude.

feeling ::  relieved – good results on the mama health front! hopeless because living with a moody two-year old brings out my inner moody two-year old. supported because my people know just what to say to a mama having a pity party

wishing/hoping ::  for some self-compassion and some more patience for my daughter. who knew being two was so hard? also can we stop calling it ‘terrible twos’ and start calling it ‘tumultuous twos’ instead?

you can't save people

tasting ::   pork bun (chilled vermicelli salad), imperial roll, lagunitas ipa, goat cheese on sour dough toast with homegrown cucumbers and tomatoes, bbq chips, vegan peanut butter whoopee, avocado tomato salad, green smoothies,

hearing ::  friends from the way back karaoke like pros. such an excellent high school reunion activity!

smelling ::  beer. other people may have gotten a little bit sloshed at the reunion and spilled their beer.

seeing ::   peeps from high school in a super nostalgic, sweet grown up way.

feeling ::  completely mangled from staying up late one night and anxious awaiting a loved one’s health test results. remarkably at home in a swimming pool and in a hammock.

wishing/hoping ::  for good health news and improved sleepy times.

stress you out

tasting ::   vegan chilled peanut noodles, homemade hummus a la kris carr,  stone fruit + blueberries in vanilla coconut yogurt with raw chia seeds, vanilla soy ice cream with salted peanuts + chocolate chips, fried chicken at rockabilly night at the zoo, dilly egg salad on sourdough.

hearing ::  a new teacher friend offer some serious encouragement about the healthy, happy, sane teacher program, nickelslots at the zoo, and happy baby shrieks in the pool most every night this week.

smelling ::  sunshine and awesomeness. this is what ruby’s cheek/neck/ear/hair smells like after playing at the park.

seeing ::   my tongue get tied in knots in a big group of strangers and my girl’s face light up at the mere mention of a swimming pool. she totally got this from me.

feeling ::  like i am doing exactly what i’ve be set on the planet to do.

wishing/hoping ::  follow through, motivation and enthusiasm continue to hitch themselves to my wagon.

saturday senses

tasting ::   watermelon, popsicles, pulled pork sandwiches, bbq chips by the bag full, beer can chicken, vanilla soy ice cream with chocolate chips, and salted peanuts.

hearing ::  my baby girl charm the socks off her grandparents, use of the pronoun “I” (my baby is growing up!) and “mama, ruby wants cookie” (36 times a day and me telling her we only have cookies everyday in minnesota)

smelling ::  weird airplane air.

seeing ::   the beauty of unplugging and hanging with my family in rural minnesota. green, green and more green.

feeling ::  like i’m still on the fishing boat days later. also super sweaty. ridiculously anxious about temps over 100 degrees for days in a row. 

wishing/hoping ::  for the super hot temperatures to stay away and for lots more connection. must make some mama play dates.

try

tasting ::   green smoothies, pb&j on toasted sprouted bread, dark chocolate coconut bars, stir fry with sweet brown rice and peach blackberry pie. (we may need a pie intervention at the end of the summer).

hearing ::  the whir of the fan and a lot of yelling (what a huge difference a few days makes).

smelling ::  desert essence coconut hand and body lotion – the scent of summer around here.

seeing ::   myself accomplish a remarkable amount of work in just one week, myself stepping out of my comfort zone on video and lots of people spreading the word about the healthy, happy, sane teacher.

feeling ::  super proud of myself for being willing to try to projects even when they make me uncomfortable. grateful to the teachers who have already signed up for the the healthy, happy, sane teacher and tired because i can’t sleep past 6 am.

mama face

tasting ::   sautéed vegetables with chick peas and couscous, vegetarian pâté, so many olives, sprouted wheat berry bagels with goat cheese, tomatoes and turkey, fresh raspberries, green smoothie and mcdonald’s. there, i said it.

hearing ::  podcasts again because one of my lovely peeps loaned me her ipod.

smelling ::  fog in the bay area and sweaty people at home. 40 degree difference is just a 70 mile car ride away.

seeing ::   childhood and college friends mingling and hanging out in the chilly park. my body parts back where they belong thanks to an excellent massage.

feeling ::  relieved the school year is finished and papa is home to help with the baby during the day! super excited to be working on the healthy, happy, sane teacher during business hours instead of 5am.

tasting ::   green smoothies,apricot pie, steak tacos, deli sandwiches as big as my head, bbq potato chips, and crazy amounts of hummus.

hearing ::  so little because my ipod has gone missing.

smelling ::  redwoods and the bay. thank goodness we live an hour+ away from cool weather and tilden park.

seeing ::   my co-workers for the last time as co-workers. i’m off to work on teaching teachers how to claim their self-care at the healthy, happy, sane teacher instead of teaching other peoples’ kids how to read.

feeling ::  grateful for my time in the classroom. man, i loved being a classroom teacher. and now feeling excited about the next chapter in my life.

big things

tasting ::   blueberry raspberry pie with vanilla non dairy ice cream, apricot blueberry pie, apricot pie, green smoothies, tofu beer brats, tri tip tacos, grilled chicken burrito, rosemary breakfast from orphan.

hearing ::  so many friends offer congratulations and support after the healthy, happy, sane teacher reveal.

smelling ::  pie baking. i made 4 this week! so many pies I had to share with the neighbors.

seeing ::   the return of some serious insomnia. and middle of the night work.

feeling ::  excited about our the healthy, happy, sane teacher program because it is exactly the kind of program that would have helped me be an even better teacher. and so grateful to have the opportunity to work on projects so close to my heart with such a generous partner, rosie.

wishing/hoping ::  to find more time on my mat and for some relief from the heat.

not too late

tasting ::   green smoothies, blueberries by the truckload, tuna salad on sourdough toast, cheerios with almond milk, vegetarian enchiladas with a tiny bit of sheep cheese.

hearing ::  the deadbolt on my front door break whilst engaged thus locking us out of the house until we paid a locksmith a whole lot of money to break it for us.

smelling ::  metal drilling metal.

seeing ::   new friends twice in one week and a new project close to revealing!

feeling ::  an EARTHQUAKE in sacramento. how is this even possible??? also a bit nutty because each day this week felt different than usual. for example, all day thursday i thought it was friday and then thursday night i thought it had been wednesday all day. welcome to my brain. you’re welcome.

wishing/hoping ::  for everyone to have a safe three day weekend and for me to get in sync with the days of the week again. i’m pretty sure a three day weekend is going to help with this situation!

Saturday Senses

A way to capture the spirit of each week…

beginning

tasting ::   green smoothies, blueberry iced tea, pancakes, homemade stir fry, vegan apple sage sausage and duck fat fries at the low brau, ruffles potato chips, fresh blueberries with vanilla soy yogurt.

hearing ::  myself talk and talk and talk and talk. for THREE hours. i miss teaching people who are upright!

smelling ::  nervous sweat. i gave a big presentation on mother’s day and it was hot. oh my goodness, stinky mama! {is that tmi?}

seeing ::   new teachers come to life right before my eyes….so many opportunities for communities to grow and for people to find their right teacher and teachers to find their right students. also: lots of under eye circles.

feeling ::  exhausted and exhilarated simultaneously. emdr broke open a pandora’s box of emotions from the past and my brain has decided the only opportunity for processing is in my sleep. ugh – can you say crazy dreams? AND so excited to be working on projects so close to my heart. while these aren’t keeping me up at night, they are certainly getting me up before the roosters (and my kid).

wishing/hoping ::  how’s about we all hope for some peaceful sleep for the restorative yoga teacher always getting on everyone to rest? k, thanks!

rest day

tasting ::  green smoothies galore, fizzy lemonade (sometimes with vodka), pad se ew at chada thai, barbeque chicken, pasta with goat cheese and asparagus, breakfast special sandwich from orphan, thai noodle salad from cafe bernardo, and lots of yummy veggie dinner bites in the park {apparently i ate out a lot this week}.

hearing ::   the wind chimes going crazy. it has been ridiculously windy here. no bueno. giant piles of pollen pelting you from across the street was a little too commonplace this week.

smelling ::  dairy free chocolate chip bars baking.

seeing ::   dc friend, portland friend, local friends for lots of meals out.

feeling :: started the week absolutely exhausted and played sleep catch up and after a few days of serious napping felt like my usual rested self. hour for hour catch up was key.

wishing/hoping ::  time could slow down just a little bit. i’m completely shocked it’s already may.

a life she loved

tasting ::  peanut butter pancakes, green smoothies,tuna on triskets,artichokes, strawberry coconut ice cream, falafel piechickpea and zucchini saute with couscous, honey wheat pretzels with applesauce.

hearing ::   dooooooooooooo yooooooooooga! mama, do yoga.

smelling ::  mountain air and pine trees on a spontaneous day trip to lake tahoe.

seeing ::   portland friends and local friends. so many people i love.

feeling :: tired. so much excitement is leaving this mama a little too wired to sleep well.

wishing/hoping ::  hoping the madness of gun violence stops in my best girl’s neighborhood in oakland. enough already.

tasting ::     mint iced tea, so many potato chips (i may need an intervention), pasta with faux meat sauce, cornmeal crust veggie pizza with vegan cheese.

hearing ::   huuuuuuuuug. kiiiiiiiisssssssss. someone was feeling particularly affectionate this week.

smelling ::  the tiniest bit of spring rain.

seeing ::   the week fly by in a fuzz. it went so fast and i don’t feel like i have much to show for it. i am officially blaming the wind.

feeling :: refreshed after taking a restorative yoga class with a friend. people, this stuff will heal what ails you. if you haven’t already tried it, go now.

wishing/hoping ::  wishing for peace and non violence in the world and my social media feeds. hoping people can process world events in a way that is helpful to themselves and others.

tasting ::     green smoothies, vegetable soup with orzo, strawberries, a rare chipolte treat and water with cucumber {it was 86 degrees this week}.

hearing ::   gram parsons pandora statio – lots of merle haggard, waylon jennings, emmylou harris and wilco.

smelling ::  coconut lotion. the weather says it’s too hot for spicy chai.

seeing ::   my friend’s heartbreak. too many dudes are dying around here. so sad.

feeling :: like i need to hold all my people close. consider yourself warned: i am a hugging fool right now.

wishing/hoping ::  to gather my tribe and hold them tight.

tasting ::     sautéed cabbage stirred into mashed potatoes, grilled chicken burrito as big as my head, grapefruit juice, green smoothies, peanut butter filled pretzels, hummus with celery + carrots, pita pizza.

hearing ::   the cry of parents who failed to plan for daylight saving time. did you hear the weeping too?  or did you plan better for the change at your house?

smelling ::  fresh air in the vic fazio wildlife area.

seeing ::   so many kinds of birds. i tell you what, if i can’t nap just take me out into nature and my batteries get recharged.

feeling :: so tired from the daylight saving time debacle and my own nights of tummy trouble. and so thankful my habit of rest has been keeping me afloat all week.

wishing/hoping ::  if i am being honest, i really just want to sleep through the night with no 2am craziness. {hold me}.

seeing ::  things come together and the universe totally supporting my plans. also my support team grow by the minute. and chris isaak hanging at the rhett miller show – rock stars collide!

feeling :: hopeful and excited about the possibilities. also super loved and supported.

wishing/hoping ::  i recovered from a night out faster – i night out past my bedtime and it is days before i recover. just in time for day light savings!

tasting :: green smoothies, late afternoon early dinner at the low brau, pink lady apples and steel cut oats .

hearing ::   bess mama! sneeze!

smelling ::  not much. allergies are hitting me hard.

seeing ::  a cracked windshield, all of my insurance policies + my agent and a very snotty kid – feeling very grown up this week.

feeling :: exhausted. sick kid + allergies = tired mama.

wishing/hoping ::  the nasal spray allergy meds work as well as they did last year. i’m so glad my doctor reminded me about them this morning!

hearing ::   a dead phone and no Internet connection for two days. also see: yelling at comcast via cell phone.

smelling ::  the zoo on a warm spring -like day.

seeing ::  the first signs of spring: 68 degrees, shoes with no socks and turquoise pants.

feeling :: anxious about work stuff and rage at comcast. a week of strong feelings indeed.

wishing/hoping :: for this week to be much less stressful.

hearing ::  “i yauv you, mama.” {how did we get so lucky with this girl?}

smelling ::  rain! while i have enjoyed the few truly warm spring days, boy that rain was a welcome change of pace.

seeing ::  health return quickly and the end of so many good books.

feeling :: excited to see lovely familiar faces today.

Saturday Senses

A way to capture the spirit of each week…

tasting :: baked honey oatmeal with raspberries and pistachios, sautéed cabbage in mashed potatoes (and then pan-fried – OMG so good), vegetable soup, chicken chow fun, lao pork fat sausages with sticky rice.

hearing ::  the truth and vulnerability and most importantly, love.

smelling ::  cold. can you really smell cold? it feels like you can. damn, it’s cold.

seeing ::  neon green snot and wind chapped cheeks. poor baby. in other news, sesame street has been introduced!

feeling :: connected and loved. also achy, congested and exhausted.

wishing/hoping :: whatever virus has entered our house will exit quickly and without much suffering.

tasting :: tower’s breakfast potatoes, cafe bernardo’s fries… i think i needed some comfort this week.

hearing ::  weezer’s good life.

smelling ::  vegetable soup simmering on the stove.

seeing ::  options i never thought existed and having them dashed quickly.

feeling :: like i’m on a roller coaster. so many changes coming this year.

wishing/hoping :: to gather information without being defensive or angry (ie letting my fear show) and to be at peace with the decisions that need to be made. talk about a lesson in acceptance!

tasting :: zen breakfast from orphan, crepes à la v3, coconut chocolate cream pie with chocolate graham cracker crust, popcorn, waffles with blueberries and peanut butter. it was a good eating week.

hearing ::  happy new year and crazy amounts of fireworks. can we all agree that midnight is too late for loud noises?

smelling :: cornmeal crust pizza. {see above}

seeing ::  a family finalized.

feeling :: connected!

wishing/hoping :: ruby starts napping again without having to drive her around and for all of you to have a wonderful return to work and school.

tasting :: chive ricotta nut cheese, jojos from trader joe’s, grilled goat cheese sandwiches, creamy vegan garlicy pasta with sauteed broccoli.

hearing ::  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! baby…walk…..

smelling :: blueberry waffles.

seeing ::  new family traditions take hold.

feeling :: content and quite frankly a little surprised. who knew doing the holiday season your own {super mellow} way would make such a difference?

wishing/hoping :: has a safe new year’s eve.

tasting :: old-fashioned vegetable soup, sprouted wheat bagels, dairy free chocolate chip cookies, grammy and girls dairy free oatmeal cranberry cookies and chada thai with friends.

hearing ::  little girl sing/hum happy birthday to herself all week.

smelling :: cookies baking and soup simmering.

seeing ::  family and friends come together to celebrate ruby’s birthday and huge piles of stuff go into the donation pile.

feeling :: like i have a 2 year old boss.

wishing/hoping :: everyone has the christmas of their own dreams while making their own traditions.

tasting :: coconut milk EGG NOG (!!!!!), green smoothies, warm lemon water before breakfast and cooked apples in steel cut oats.

hearing ::  ruby start singing all her favorite songs – finally.

smelling :: falafel pie baking.

seeing :: the inside of my eyelids. i totally fell asleep doing yoga this week. dude, i was tired.

feeling :: o.m.g. so. much. better.

wishing/hoping :: we (you, me) can stay healthy and sane for the rest of the holidays.

smelling :: wet leaves.

seeing :: myself trying to control little things because i can’t control big things.

feeling :: anxious (then better) because of lots of hugs.

tasting :: pears/pistachios/goat cheese together, roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes and grilled chicken burrito with tofutti sour cream.

hearing ::  a lot of awesome via the cake station on pandora. think: weezer, beck and potus

smelling :: fennel, brussels sprouts and butternut squash roasting in the oven.

seeing :: chickens on the play structure.

feeling :: refreshed post retreat and shocked thanksgiving is already next week.

wishing/hoping :: for everyone celebrating american thanksgiving a happy one.

tasting :: peanut butter+raspberry jam sandwiches on sprouted toast, scrambled eggs with dill, thai food from chada, citrus beet salad and jambalaya sans shrimp.

hearing ::  a sigh of relief the election is over.

smelling :: redwoods and rain!

seeing :: our sweet tiny one asleep under a pile of pillows and little vampire teeth FINALLY poking through her gums.

feeling :: exhausted. dude, daylight saving time SUCKS for toddlers. and their parents. {mostly the parents}.

wishing/hoping :: little girl gets back on sleeping track and for some deep restoration from my retreat tomorrow.

tasting :: whole wheat waffles with peanut butter and syrup, loads of english breakfast tea and emergen-c super orange.

hearing ::  baby girl, dressed as a cat for halloween, shouting “ME NOW!”  all over the neighborhood.

smelling :: ikea. which i think smells kinda like an airport – vaguely of dust, cinnamon buns and hope.

seeing :: our tiny girl, as a cat, in honor of her making friends with ours this year.

feeling :: the tiniest cold virus taking hold. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

wishing/hoping :: everyone remembers to wash their hands and avoids touching their faces.

hearing ::  the sound of music soundtrack on repeat. IN MY HEAD. i think i over did it last week.

smelling :: rain! glorious rain!

seeing :: bookcases moved all over the house and little piles of stuff everywhere. now would not be the best time to stop over.

feeling :: cozy and happy. such a better week than last.

Saturday Senses

A way to capture the spirit of each week…

tasting :: homemade chicken noodle soup, zen breakfast {over easy whole egg, sautéed spinach and a side of bacon}, soy chorizo lentil stew and grilled chicken burrito with vegan sour cream.

hearing ::  the sound of music soundtrack on repeat. someone has been dreaming of a future in musical theater.

smelling :: sweaty kids at the park. so completely over the 90 degree heat.

seeing :: friends, near and far in person. myself step away from the internet and my mood shifting toward a lighter, brighter mode.

feeling :: battered by an epic tantrum. who knew little girl had it in her? not our best afternoon yesterday. also fully supported by my husband. dude knocked it out of the park. so appreciate him.

wishing/hoping :: the change to fall weather mellows everyone out.
