How {and why} to Hold A Clothing Swap

For the past few years, I’ve been involved with organizing a women’s clothing swap twice a year at It’s All Yoga, the yoga studio where I teach,  and recently I’ve been asked to explain how and why we do it.

What Is A Clothing Swap?

It’s a get together with friends, clients, students with the purpose of trading gently used items (clothes, shoes and accessories) with others.

Wardrobes are remade and friendships begin with chatting over tables while in search of that perfect new-to-you outfit. I have connected with friends and students while building a new seasonable wardrobe.

Why Hold A Clothing Swap:

1. It’s fun.

2. It’s an environmentally and budget friendly way to build a new wardrobe for yourself while helping someone else build theirs.

3. The clothes and shoes that mock you from the closet because they were expensive, but just not quite right, usually can find a new home with someone you know, thus making everyone happy.

4. We raise a bunch of funds for a local charity and donate all the unclaimed items for them to sell in their shop.

5. We get to finally talk to the lovely people on the mats next to ours! Teachers and students interacting with each other in a super friendly environment is a great way to help everyone feel like they belong to the IAY community.

6. Friends bring friends and we usually leave SwapAsana with new to us clothes and connections with people we wouldn’t have otherwise made.

How To Hold A Clothing Swap:

My friend Amy hosted a swap party at her house this summer with a couple of girlfriends and wrote a post about it. I totally scored in the sweater and dress department and got to taste Joy The Baker’s famous Simple Vegan Chocolate Cake.   All in all, a great night!

In my research I also found this post and this comprehensive guide.

At It’s All Yoga’s SwapAsana, we put half of the goods on tables at the beginning and take a break midway. We use the free-for-all method and most people take what looks best and leave the rest. There is one group of swappers who try things on together and decide who brings the item home based on who it most flatters. Team work at its finest!

If you are interested in hosting a swap party, I definitely recommend going to someone else’s party first. I did and fell in love! Thanks, Stitch Swap!

It’s All Yoga’s bi-annual SwapAsana is this Sunday, October 14th at the studio in Midtown Sacramento. Feel free to come by!

Have you ever hosted/attended a swap? What was your experience?

Teacher Cooks Edition! Pasta with Baby Broccoli and Lemon Garlic Sauce

It’s a good thing I’ve got morning walking dates with friends this fall because I am loving all the pasta and bread and the delicious fall foods intending to fill in my fall clothes.

My husband pretty much went vegetarian a couple months ago and my kid is completely uninterested in chicken, so I’ve been experimenting with all sorts of meat free (and dairy free – allergic, yo!) dishes.  My Food Finds Pinterest board is full of ideas you’ll see here this season.

This week’s dish was brilliantly simple and delicious. I would eat it every day if I wouldn’t have to buy new pants.

Without further ado, I bring you Pasta with Baby Broccoli and Lemon Garlic Sauce.

Recipe is so close to the one from The Yogic Kitchen, click over there to see what’s up.

Pasta with Baby Broccoli and Lemon Garlic Sauce

Serves 4

Ingredients Notes:

I used Earth Balance vegan “butter”

I wasn’t sure what Italian seasonings she meant, so I used 21 salute from Trader Joe’s – 2 handfuls plus a couple of shakes of red pepper flakes.

I juiced the lemon and added it to the sauce as well. Who wants a zested lemon just laying around the house? Put that sucker to work!

Those little “ear” pastas crack me up.

What to do:

Add parmesan cheese if you want, but I had it without and it was delicious! I have rosemary bread crumbs that I should have added. Hmmm, guess I’ll have to make it again next week.

All Together Now….A Long, Steady Exhale

{via}

Michelle wrote an excellent piece about breathing called Epidemic Inhale. Please go read it.

No, really.

Go.

Read.

It.

Ok, while you were there did you follow her directions for a long, slow, steady exhale?

Feels good, doesn’t it?

+++++

This is what yoga is for me now: one giant exhale.

A time and a place to just LET.IT.BE.

Reminders to pause, yawn, and be conscious of my breathing and how my body feels.

+++++

It hasn’t always been this way.

I’m pretty sure most people are thinking I’m making funny shapes with my body when I’m “at yoga” and for a long time that is exactly what I did. The more difficult the class, the better.

I was ‘doing’ yoga, damnit.

But now, I’m focusing on the not doing. Letting things go. Asking myself what my body really needs in this moment.

More often than not, my body is craving rest.

And exhaling.

As a culture we spend so much going, going, going. Always pushing forward and racing from one project, meeting, soccer game to the next.  I am totally do this too. Even as I sit here with seven open tabs on my computer – including three email accounts, Twitter and Facebook.

So I rest.

You can too.

Ready?

All together now:

A long, steady exhale.

Ten Things I Loved In September

My friend, Rosie Molinary, made a list and I loved hers so much I stole her idea. Now I’ve been inspired to pause and notice the good stuff each month.

Ten Things I Loved In September

Things I/We Did

1.      Old 97’s Too Far To Care Tour

My favorite band playing my favorite album start to finish in one of my favorite cities in the world? YES, please!

Seriously, one of the best shows of my life.

Imagine orange cowboy boots, Maker’s Mark up, and very, very loud singing along. Oh and the in-between-song hopping up and down in anticipation of the NEXT.FAVORITE.SONG!

Old97s know how to take care of their fans. For years, my girlfriends have talked about how “wouldn’t it be great if the 97s played TFTC at a show? Like, the whole thing?”

True story.

Dreams do come true.

-Thanks to fellow superfan/photographer, Lori Hillhouse of I’ll Show You My Four Leaf Clover, for the photo.

2.      I started teaching a WEEKLY restorative class at It’s All Yoga – Tuesdays, 7:15-8:30.

You should come. It’ll be fun.

Seriously, even if you aren’t in Sacramento or haven’t ever tried restorative yoga, you can do this pose (Viparita Karani or Legs-Up-The-Wall) for ten minutes and you will feel so much better than you do right now.

Check here for potential health considerations.

3.     I went to the movies! In the theater! Again! This time with a friend!

4.    We went to a swimming pool party at our friends new house. So happy to have even more friends close by.

5.     I taught a class for Sacramento Free Day of YogaSo awesome to meet so many new people. Labor Day Monday – get it on your calendar now for next year.

On The Plate

6.     Fat Face strawberry coconut popsicle.

7.    Sweet potato black bean stew.

September, in a nutshell – too hot not to eat frozen treats, but the calendar says fall and so we eat fall food.

Teacher Cooks Edition! Vegetable White Bean Soup with Israeli Couscous

It’s fall on the calendar and damn it, I will eat soup even when it is 90+ degrees! Maybe it is cool at your house.

Funny thing is that I am not much of a soup person so it’s no wonder I keep adding couscous to all my soups and basically turning them into something that tastes like soup, but you chew it. In any case I’m a fan of all the adding couscous to soup action happening around here.

Maybe I just like the extra calories. Hmmmm.

Without further ado, I bring you Vegetable White Bean Soup with Israeli Couscous.

Recipe is based on the one from Regina’s Vegetarian Table.

Vegetable White Bean Soup with Israeli Couscous

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

1 TBS olive oil

1 1/4 cups of white beans, rinsed { I used 2 cans of white beans, rinsed}

1 onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 cups vegetable stock

2 to 3 quarts of water

2 tomatoes chopped (I used one 14 oz can with the juice}

2 stalks of celery, diced

2 carrots, sliced

2 small squash, sliced (I used zucchini}

3/4 tsp group cumin

3/4 tsp chihi power

1/4 tsp seasoned salt

pinch of fines herbes or Italian seasoning

salt and pepper

1 box Israeli couscous – about 1 1/4 cups

What to do:

Prepare the beans if using dry by soaking them in water over night or at least 2 hours. I used canned so I drained and rinsed them well.

1.  Saute onions and garlic in olive oil until tender.

2.  Add vegetable stock, water, beans, and all the vegetables.

3.  Add spices and the couscous then simmer over low heat for 3 to 4 hours or over night in the slow cooker.

All of us enjoyed this with multigrain crackers because we love carbs.

TGBTS Cooks Edition! Sweet Potato Black Bean Stew

Fall is coming! Fall is coming! And with the cooling of temperatures (at least in the mornings and evenings) comes my desire to eat all the fall foods: soups, stews, curries and pumpkin spiced treats.

Does this happen to you? I swear with the changing of the seasons I find myself ridiculously excited for certain foods.

Anyway, I was inspired to make the stew not only because of the change in season, but also I needed to use up some pantry items I unearthed in my Great Pantry Re-Do of 2012.

Without further ado, I bring you Sweet Potato Black Bean Stew.

Sweet Potato Black Bean Stew

Recipe is based on the one from Ready Made Magazine – December/January 2011 issue.

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

1 TBS vegetable oil

2 Sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1 inch cubes

1 onion, peeled and roughly diced

1 red pepper, seeds removed and chopped into 1/2 inch pieces

1 jalapeño {omitted – I am not so spicy and neither is my baby}.

1 clove garlic minced

1 TBS chili powder

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp cayenne {omitted}

3 Cups vegetable broth

14.5 oz can of black beans, rinsed and drained {I used slow cooked beans from the freeze because I am fancy that way}

14.5 oz can of diced roasted tomatoes with juices

1 Cup frozen corn

1/4 cup chopped cilantro {replaced with green onions because I forgot to buy it}

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice

shredded cheddar to serve {replaced with chunks of avocado – dairy allergy, yo}

What to do:

1.  Heat oil in a large, heavy-bottom pot over medium heat. Add sweet potatoes, onion, red pepper, (and jalapeño if you are using it) and garlic, stirring to coat with oil. Saute until onion and peppers are soft about 4 minutes.

2.  Add chili powder and cumin (+ cayenne if you are using it) and stir well. Reduce heat to medium, cover and allow potatoes to soften about 7-8 minutes. Be sure to stir occasionally.

3.  Once potatoes are fork tender, add broth, black beans and tomatoes. Bring it to a boil, stirring well and scraping all the bits off the bottom of the pot. Add corn, reduce heat to simmer and cook for another 15 minutes (or way, way longer).

4. Before serving, stir in green onions (or cilantro if you remembered it) and lime juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with chunks of ripe avocado (or cheddar).

I served this with tortilla chips one night, ate it over basmati rice one meal and mashed it up for the baby for lunch and even had enough for a small gathering of friends. So, so good! And yes, I even found a way to incorporate sliced black olives because that’s how we roll these days.

Don’t Take It Personally and Other New {School} Year Resolutions

New years just beg for resolutions in my opinion. Since my brain works on the school year calendar, new years start in the fall. By January I’m all resolutioned out.

Last {working} school year, my mantra/resolution/intention was to Not Take It Personally. This pretty much changed everything about my life.

In my quest to not take things personally, I managed to listen more than I talked, I quieted down, really listened and let other people be the expert (pretty major for a know-it-all like me) and I let go of things that weren’t working for me.

Work relationships got easier, parent interactions (something I struggled with in the past) were more clear, professional and well, easier.  Even my personal life felt lighter and more fun.

Since school just started in this house, I’ve been recently thinking about what my intention for this school year will be. I know I’m not in the classroom, so why have one? To be honest, since I’ve started having an intention for the school year my professional life has greatly improved in the areas where I put my focus. Plus  I’m already thinking about next school year and I’m getting a bit anxious.

Where will I be teaching?

What will I be teaching?

Who will I be teaching?

Will I secure a job share?

Where will Ruby spend her time while I’m at work?

See what I mean? So many unanswered questions with so many possible answers. So many, in fact, I’m not quite sure how to wrap my brain around all the possibilities and all these loose ends are already making me tighten and grasp and grab at answers. I don’t know about you, but I’m sure my best decisions are not made while totally stressing about the outcome.

So, what’s a teacher/planner/mama/not-so-secret-control-freak to do?

I’ve decided my intention for this school year is to say yes.

For me,

  • Saying yes means I am open to all the possibilities, even the ones I am not sure exist yet.
  • Saying yes, means not having to know right now what will happen next school year (or even next week).
  • Saying yes means not getting mired in the details and letting the unknown suck the fun out of life right now.
  • Saying yes means finding ease instead of grabbing, grasping and holding.

+++++

So, friends, how do you handle the big unknowns in your life?

Do you make resolutions or set intentions during times of transitions?

Do you have any words of wisdom for a current stay-at-home-mama needing to send her bebe to childcare in the relatively near future?

43 Books – Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar

As part of my 43 Before 43 I’m reading 43 Books.

tiny-beautiful-things

Tiny Beautiful Things is a collection of Dear Sugar columns from The Rumpus. I checked this book out from my library’s e-reader collection because so many people have raved about the author’s (Cheryl Strayed) other book, Wild, that I decided I’d read this while I waited for Wild to become available.

Until I read this book I didn’t even know Sugar existed. I’m hoping I’m the only one! If you’ve never read Dear Sugar, stop what you are doing and go check it out.

Why you may be asking yourself, am I advocating you spend time reading an advice column? In a word, kindness. Sugar answers every single letter she gets with kindness. And a whole heart and no BS. In my opinion tender-hearted kindness is in short supply these days of reality TV marathons and competitiveness for competitiveness sake.

I spent most of the time reading Tiny Beautiful Things with tears streaming down my cheeks because I could feel Sugar’s empathy and compassion coming through her writing. I felt like she really cared about the letter writers and their problems.

It also probably helps that the problems people write to Sugar about are universal – love, lust, loss – and either me or someone I love has been in the midst of suffering like that and the answers Sugar gives and nothing short of tender reminders that we’re all in it together.

Do I recommend this book? Without a doubt.

Would I want to be friends with author? Yes. She seems like she’s been through a whole lot of life and come out the other side.

Have you read Tiny Beautiful Things or the Dear Sugar column? What did you think?

My Best Of…

Over the last year I’ve become a walker. Partly because I need to get the girl outside and partly because I find life is more manageable once I’ve taken myself on a walk.

Andrew from A Peaceful Resolution posted about The 10-Minute Worry Walk and I decided to share with all my freshly back a school teacher friends. I believe walking with your worries works better than sweet or savory carby snacks. Plus 10 minutes is shorter than recess, so you can still hit the bathroom before picking up your class.

+++++

Vegan frosty and fudgesicles? Yes, please! Being dairy-free just got a lot more delicious thanks to Amy at Coffee and Sunshine. These may be the only reasons to celebrate the still hot as blazes temperatures.

+++++

How To Be Unhappy – from Chris at The Art of Non-Conformity. The comments are as brilliant as the post itself. Read it and add to it.

+++++

Have you ever been physically and emotionally exhausted from your job as a teacher? Or a mother? Or a daughter? Me too. Jen Louden has some very brilliant tips on How To Stop the Cycle of Over Providing.

+++++

Have you read the Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin? The book? I did and found it to be super helpful. I also read the blog and am very much looking forward to her new book Happier At Home coming out in September.

Anyway, I find her writing style simple and compelling and this post about getting up earlier to find time for yourself to be brilliant. Easy for me to say because I’m a morning lark, but I thought it was worth sharing. The more I talk to other moms and teachers, the more I realize how hard it is for women to take time for themselves.

What Do You Suck At?

Recently Danielle LaPorte asked the The Burning Question, “What do you suck at?”

I decided to answer.

{photo credit: Girlnamedjim in WikiCommons}

+++++

Paperwork of all kinds. Especially at work. For this reason, I could never be a Special Ed teacher.

Organization of paperwork I suck at. If it isn’t electronic, I don’t know where it is. Remember how I warned you about my paperwork issue?

Going to bed as soon as I am tired. Why do I resist the sleep? Probably because I want a couple of kid free hours a day.

Leaving the house when I need some mama alone time. Instead I hear “Mama. Mama. Mama.” from the other side of whichever door I am behind.

Going to the bank. Depositing checks is the absolute worst.

Pretending to care about stuff I don’t care about. I think I learned this from my students.

Keeping my opinions and thoughts to myself. I have always been outspoken. It’s like a truth compulsion.

Not rolling my eyes when stupid things are said in my presence. It’s an embarrassing hold over from my teen years.

Talking on the phone. Please don’t take it personally if I don’t call you, I don’t call anyone.

Remembering to check my phone for messages. Or knowing the location of said phone.

Putting my dishes in the dishwasher. The hubs especially hates this one.

Wearing uncomfortable shoes and clothes in the name of fashion. Or any other reason. If I didn’t do this at 22, I am surely not at 42.

Letting other people drive. Unless we are in an unfamiliar place, then I suck at driving.

Doing stuff I don’t want to do. Last child in me or what?

Buying stuff because other people have stuff. F the Joneses.

Letting my baby cry. As far as I can tell, she is just sending me a message with her limited vocabulary.

Not reading multiple books at a time. How will I ever read everything I want to read if I don’t always have lots of books going at once?

Not aspirational home goods shopping. Oh how I love to waste money at IKEA I do like to buy house things to make life better and then never use them. I am getting better at this and recently if I haven’t used item within a couple weeks, I have been returning stuff.

Bartering prices on used items. This kills me. I get all weird and tongue tied.

Washing my face before I go to bed. While Ruby’s nighttime routine is a well-oiled machine, mine has gotten a bit lazy.

But enough about me. What about you? What do you suck at?

{ru TV – image source – me}

tasting :: italian and korean food in west texas.

hearing :: ruby lose her marbles on the return flight. girlfriend does not work well without her nap.

smelling :: the delta breeze.

seeing :: the rear bumper on our rental car squished in and the el paso police department responding quickly.

feeling ::  happy to be home and back into our routine.

wishing/hoping :: for the last month of summer break to move slow like honey.

Ten Things I Loved In July

My friend, Rosie Molinary, made a list and I loved hers so much I stole her idea. Now I’ve been inspired to pause and notice the good stuff each month.

Ten Things I Loved In July

Things I/We Did

1.      San Francisco – Once the mercury rises to over 100 degrees, I’m looking for an escape hatch. We are lucky enough to not only live within driving distance of SF, but have friends to visit while we’re there. We took advantage of our time off from work by driving to the East Bay and taking BART to the City. We visited at a couple of playgrounds/parks and reveled not sweating in the sun.

Late in the afternoon, we sautered over to a friend’s house to celebrate his son’s first birthday. Ruby helped by drooling all over his new Casio keyboard, riding his poki and charming his grandparents with her laughing while running away tricks. Oh and we ate excellent pupusas.

We left with a new Giants cap for Ruby and full bellies.

{Why, yes that is mother/daughter gingham.}

2.      East Bay Parks – Kennedy Grove, Tilden, Fernandez, Cheese Parks. So many playgrounds/parks and so little time. Ruby has so much energy, we keep her on the move and sometimes invite friends.

3.     Visited my mom. – El Paso Zoo and swimming at the hotel. We decided to make the hotel our playground.

4.     Visited Jed’s Dad – Mendocino County – Papa’s Papa’s ranch outside of Boonville is the biggest toddler science lab. We saw lizards, hawks, quail, bunnies, hummingbirds, bees, and various other insects and lots of plants. We hiked (as much as you can with a 21 pound toddler yelling, “UP!” the whole time), snoozed in the hammock (Ruby) and ate berries right from the bush.

Some people also switched hats.

5.     Yoga classes – taught and took. My favorites: Mondays 5:45 with Michelle and Saturdays 9am with Madeleine.

On The Plate

6.     Tacos, pupusas and guacamole.

7.     Stone fruit!

Products (and Services) I Love

8.      Sacramento County Library – pretty much every book I want to read, free books for my Kindle and tons of board books for Ruby. Plus it is perfectly walkable from my house and a wonderful community meeting place.

9.      Midtown Birkenstock – cute comfortable shoe heaven.

10.     Ikea home delivery – I wish I could afford to do this every time I bought something heavy.

43 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me

1.     I check the weather of places where my nearest and dearest live every day. It gives me a moment to think of each one and how they might be spending their day.

In case you are wondering, the cities checked are:

New York Mills, Minnesota

El Paso, Texas

Chesterfield, England

Portland, Oregon

Tainan City, Taiwan

Sacramento, Oakland, San Fransisco, El Sobrante, Pioneer and Boonville, California.

2.     My favorite Pandora stations (other than Rhett Miller and Old 97s): Freedom ’90 – George Michael and Raffi.

3.      I always have multiple games of WWF going with V3 and the husband. I have been playing the same random stranger since my very first game 2 years ago. He taught me almost everything I know by slaughtering me every game for a year.

4.     In addition to dairy, I am wildly allergic to shellfish and melon. Yes, it is really hard to find something I can eat in most restaurants. There is cheese everywhere!

5.      I despise bananas and being invited to people’s houses to eat is really stressful. I don’t want to be any trouble and yet here’s my gigantic list of food allergies.

6.     Son Volt’s Trace is my favorite road trip sing along music. Followed very closely by The Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Wreck Your Life and Too Far To Care by Old 97s.

7.     I covet other people’s swimming pools and dogs, but really don’t want my own because of the maintenance. Plus those things truly make you a grown up.

8.     You can almost always find some sort of allergen free snack in my purse.

9.     I hate sleeping in a house alone. Apparently I still think there is a Boogeyman.

10.     Ever since switching Ruby to a back carry, I have secretly enjoyed the puzzled looks on strangers’ faces as I walk through Target looking like I am talking to myself.

11.     It took me a long time to really enjoy restorative yoga and now I am on a quest to make up for lost time. Why did I make everything so hard?

12.     Airports are one of my happy places. I love going bye-bye! Other happy places include: in my daughter’s arms, in the presence of Redwood trees, being snuggled by my sweetheart, on my yoga mat and at the ocean.

13.     Teaching feels like home. I am so grateful to be able to help people and support my family by doing something I love.

14.     Seeing my friends with their parents and siblings makes me very happy and makes me feel less alone. Everyone’s family is nutty!

15.     I briefly thought about studying to be a librarian but decided against it because the library world was in transition from card catalogs to computer systems and programs were closing all over the US. Plus I needed a J-O-B.

16.     Funeral director was the number one career that came up in every aptitude test I took in college.

17.      I volunteered and worked in reproductive politics for almost a decade.

18.      I am against the death penalty. Have been since I was a child. And yes, I have thought about it. A lot.

19.     I am very intrigued by glamping and would possibly give up my anti-camping stance if someone took me under their wing. A camping mentor perhaps?

20.     I miss my 20s, but am so much happier and self-aware/at peace in my 40s.

21.     At age 20 I had bunions removed from the little toe sides of both feet and beginnings of hammertoes corrected. The result? No more foot pain, second toes which do not bend, and an expensive comfortable shoe wardrobe.

22.      I am so thankful the Internet wasn’t widely used in my 20s so I don’t have to cringe at my stupidity being documented forever. You really had to be there to enjoy it.

23.     Listening to Jack Kornfield’s Beginner’s Guide To Forgiveness changes my life with each listen. So much wisdom.

24.     Loving the learning process hasn’t come easily for me. As a child I didn’t really learn to learn – ie break down problems into smaller steps and work hard and use failure as a teacher – I either got something or I quit. Turns out this is common for children, especially girls, labeled “bright”. Who knew giving what you think of as a compliment, could stunt the learning process?

25.     My husband and I were acquainted in high school and share mutual friends and memories from that era. It is so nice not to have to explain ElSob#1.

26.     Many people I have met online I absolutely adore. I thank my lucky stars Rhett Miller introduced me to Twitter, JojosUK introduced me to Facebook and Michelle introduced me to blogging.

27.     My feet are so ticklish it almost kills me to get a pedicure.

28.     My hair stylist (one if my BFFs) is completely responsible for anything awesome going on with my hair. I just sit in the chair and let her work her magic. She’s the trained professional and I have zero idea what looks good until I see it.

29.     Once I decide I like you, you are totally stuck with me.

30.     At 42 I am finally starting to forget some things. Prior to losing brain cells from so much time online and aging, I could pretty much remember ever name, face and birth date of every single person I ever met. It was weird. And kind of awesome.

31.     My best learning comes from watching pros demonstrate a couple times and being able to ask a couple questions. I see, I do, I got it. Give me written directions? Forget about it.

32.     In 5th grade one of my teachers referred to me as charismatic. When I asked what that meant she told me that people can’t help but like me even if they didn’t want to.

I understood that as I bugged her, but she couldn’t help but like me. Or it bugged her that other people liked me when she didn’t.

33.     Spending an entire day reading is one of my favorite activities. Finding a café in a new city and spending a day reading and people watching is my idea of heaven. Way better than sight seeing.

34.     Coffee is wrong according to my taste buds.

35.     I started wearing glasses daily the first day of college because I decided learning was more important than vanity.

36.     I briefly participated in a contact lens study and decided glasses were for me after all. Turns out boys do make passes at girls who wear glasses and they are the kind of boys I like.

37.     If the word simplicity is attached to something, I have probably read it and applied it to my life.

38.     Napping with Ruby is a reminder to me to slow down and rest every day.

39.     Nothing makes my heart sing quite like Ruby running toward me laughing and wanting me to pick her up. We got the right baby.

40.     When facing a potentially unpleasant situation, I always try to remember the motto, “If it can’t be fun, it better be funny.”

41.     It took me a long time to catch on that every yoga class ends with Savasana. Imagine how delighted I was when I finally figured it out!

42.    My first concert was the Police Ghost In the Machine Tour 1983. It changed my life and made me a life long live music lover. I still listen to music like I’m 13.

43.     A friend I didn’t know read anything I’d ever written declared that I am a good writer. Best compliment I ever received – unexpected and completely appreciated. It blew me away.

On My Kindle

We’ve been on the road a lot recently visiting family, friends and playgrounds and parks in the Bay Area. It’s been refreshing to get out of the heat in the Sacramento Valley and spend some time reading somewhere other than home.

Here’s what’s on my Kindle:

God bless the Sacramento Public Library and their e-book loans. Saves me tons of money and gives me the freedom to read, read, read!

Ten Things I Loved In June

My friend, Rosie Molinary, made a list and I loved hers so much I stole her idea. Last month I was late to the party {click here for May’s list}, but now I’ve been inspired to pause and notice the good stuff each month.

{photo source: we heart it.}

Here are Ten Things I Loved In June

Things I/We Did

1.      Summer Break!!! –  Our little family survived our first school year and have enjoyed having more time with Jed/papa the last couple weeks.

2.      Wearing dresses and leggings to play with Ruby in the park and the most wonderful thing happened. A mom (wearing capris and a t-shirt) came up to me and told me I looked beautiful in my dress and that I’d inspired her to wear the dresses hanging in her closet. Talk about a way to make someone’s day!

3.     My workout partner has returned!  Boy, let me tell you, friends, I am a social creature when it comes to exercise. I will gladly do anything as long as I have a partner to do it with. Let to my own devices, I’m on Facebook.

4.     Taking Ruby to visit UC Davis and letting her walk around campus. We visited during finals week and she happily said hello to every stressed out student she encountered. Made me wonder where (or if) she’s going to college. *gulp*

5.     We hosted long-time friends (like from junior high!) for a potluck. Why do I resist having people over? Please remind me to do this more often.

In The Kitchen

6.     Vegan Oreo Cupcakes. – Potlucks rock.

7.     Thundersticks

Products (and Services) I Love

8.      Dansko sandals – I wear the clogs and Mary Janes to teach and secretly covet other teachers’ sandals so I decided to make these mine. Must have been a good omen because they were on super sale.

9.      It’s All Yoga – yes, I know I teach there. I also take classes there. Such goodness.

10.      The Dreamer – Rhett Miller’s latest (and best) solo record. Brilliant and self-produced.
