Best Break Up Album of All Time: You Decide

phone

Three things happened recently that made me think of the worst break up of my life.

The first is deciding to attend my 25th high school reunion this weekend.

What?

I know. I don’t even know how that happened.

Just know this decision has my brain is all awash in high school memories and with that memories of my first long term (8.5 years!) relationship. While we didn’t attend the same high school, going back in time got me thinking a lot about that particular break up.

The second was reading Rosie’s post Getting Over Heartbreak: A Primer. I wish I’d had this when I was getting over that relationship. My intuition helped me get through using most of the ten steps, but it sure would have been nice to have them all together right in front of my face.

My favorite tip: minimize exposure. I’m even quoted!

As Tami says, “call your girlfriends instead of calling him. unfriend on fb, take his number out of your phone.  If you are still dying from pain after 6 months of no contact, maybe talk then.”

The last was catching Alanis Morrisette’s “You Learn” on the way to the pool the other night. I was brought back to a moment in time when in the summer of 1995 four twenty-something women, two British and two American, were unabashedly singing out loud every word to every song of Jagged Little Pill over drinks at a casual dinner party and the conversation that happened as a result.

And this got me thinking about break up albums. Is Jagged Little Pill everyone’s break up album or are there other records that help people move on from heartbreak?

You tell me. What’s the most played heartbreak record in your life?

The Interpreter – Rhett Miller

A Thanksgiving treat?

An early Christmas gift?

On The Interpreter Rhett covers some of my all time favorite songs: American Girl, California Stars, Wave of Mutilation, Waterloo Sunset and a bunch of other songs that sound awesome.

Maybe he covered your favorites too.

To hear the whole album before it comes out on Tuesday, November 22nd – click here.

In other news, the best husband in the WHOLE WORLD said I may be able to go to see Rhett in San Francisco at the end of the month.

A Thanksgiving Miracle?

Those exist, don’t they?

Anyone want to join me?

2. My list didn’t have any songs from Grand Theatre Volume 2 because I hadn’t gotten it yet {been an insanely weird month – not to worry, I picked on up at the show}.

It is AWESOME!

Fantasy Set List: Old 97’s at Harlow’s, August 14th

Much to my surprise, my favorite band, Old 97’s,  is returning to Sacramento this weekend {the second time this summer and second time EVER}. I am ridiculously excited because with the Rubes coming soon, I’m not sure how many shows I’ll be going to in the near future. That being said, Sunday night I plan to rock.

Making a set list every night must be torture when you have so many good songs to choose from, so if I were in charge of the set list this is what it would look like.

39 Greatest Hits According to Me

Every Night Is Friday Night (Without You)
A State Of Texas
Champaign, Illinois
Let The Whiskey Take The Reins
Please Hold On While The Train Is Moving
No Baby I
My Two Feet
The One
Here’s to the Halcyon
Early Morning
Rollerskate Skinny
King Of All The World
Buick City Complex
Designs On You
W.I.F.E.
Eyes for You – {If I only get one song, this would be it}
Ray Charles
Hands Off
Wish the Worst
St. Ignatius
Jagged
Lonely Holiday
Indefinitely
Nineteen
Valentine
Won’t Be Home
Coahuila
The New Kid
Bloomington
Friends Forever
Salome
Melt Show Streets of Where I’m From
Four Leaf Clover
The Other Shoe
Victoria
W-I-F-E
Bel Air
Timebomb

In your fantasy world if you were in charge of making a set list, who would you make it for and what songs would you include?

Never seen the Old 97’s? Here is a recent show.

Song notes:

1. A little solo road trip let me dig deep into my old97s/Rhett Miller catalog. {I’ve been banned from playing them while the hubs is home. He seems to think he’s heard them enough over the years. Whatevs.}

2. Seeing Rhett play this live is a little slice of awesome because of the duet nature of the song. One side of the audience gets the male Rhett and the other gets the female.

There are also crazy internet rumors about women from the audience coming up on stage to sing with him. {What a ridiculously terrifying fantasy/nightmare!}

3. Are you in Sacramento August 14th? If so, maybe we’ll get to see him play this at  Harlow’s.

SO much can and does change in a week.

Hello, reality!

No back to school shopping or lesson planning for me. Just getting ready for the Rubes.

Song notes:

1. The hubs is a bit sad we’re missing the Forever Goldrush show at Harlow’s August 12th because we’ll be out-of-town, so he’s been playing a lot of FGR this week.

2. I’ve been reminded just how much I loved Damon’s voice and FGR’s debut album Unknown Territory with songs like Songs Bottles Get Broken To, Still In The Water, and Hey Cowboy – how could I not?

3. Now I’m bummed we aren’t in town to see them. Are you in Sacramento the 12th? If so, get over to Harlow’s and have a beer for me.

Um, yeah. So last week I talked about not being ready to go back to work and I am indeed not going back to work. Anyone looking for a teaching job? I’ve seen the temporary job listing for mine.

Hello, reality.

Song notes:

1. So I’ve been spending a lot of time in San Francisco this summer as part of my Summer of Intentionality: To Learn – travel in my own backyard and my oh my she is a beauty. Over the years of living in Sacramento life has gotten so full of every day demands I have been neglecting the Bay Area. Recently I’ve been reminded what a mistake that has been.

2. Speaking of beauty, who else thinks Chris Isaak sold his soul to the devil for his good looks, amazing voice, charm and song writing talent?

3. The album is one of many that were the soundtrack to my falling in love with the hubs era. *swoon*

2. The mustache! The curls! The garter belts (!) on the sleeves! Oh Dennis DeYoung…

2. My bestie from childhood had this on vinyl and we played it on her yellow Holly Hobbie record player in the garage while we tried out our roller disco moves on the slippery garage floor.

Love listening to commercial class rock stations in the car between here and the Bay Area. You get to hear exactly the same songs you listened to growing up practically in the same rotation. Makes for great sing along car rides.

Song notes:

1. Undoubtably one of the best American rock and roll songs of all time. Seriously, who doesn’t love this song? If that’s you, don’t tell me. It might ruin our relationship.

2. American Girl is one of those songs that makes me want to learn to play guitar and get over singing in public.

3. Overheard conversation in my husband’s 4th grade class several years ago, “I know, Mr. B., only Tom can be Petty.”

4. I broke my I-hate-concerts-at-big-venues rule a couple of years ago to see Tom Petty play on a big screen from half a mile away. Just know I learned my lesson.

Crazy good week here in summer break land. Spent all week in the Writing Leadership Institute and felt like it was such a great use of time. That is saying a lot – going to work during the first week of break.

Song notes:

1. I’ve been listening to a lot of Queen’s greatest hits lately. I’m sort of discovering them now through a different lens. These were radio songs growing up and they still rock.

2. One of my best friends is getting married today and I’ve got love and best friends on the brain.

Um, so Friday got away from me in a flurry of yoga and paper. Ending school on a Thursday always throws me for a loop. So it’s Saturday and we’re having Song of the Day today instead.

The obvious choice for an end of the year song would be this, but I can’t post it because he has scared the bejesus out of me since I first saw him in the Bee Gee’s Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band movie in 1978.

Yes, I saw it in the theatre and yes, it was the worst movie – ever. And not just because I spilled an entire Dr. Pepper on my brand new white jeans.

Song notes:

1. Pat rocks. Not just the song, but the whole package. The hair, the makeup, the outfit. Now 30+ years later, she looks completely contemporary. I think I saw that shirt at Bows and Arrows last night.

2. Songs like this make me happy. And sing along really loudly.

3. I just found out Pat has a memoir out called Between A Heart and A Rock Place. Hello summer reading!

The 97’s are coming! The 97’s are coming!

In case you missed it, my favorite band since forever (ok, except Duran Duran and Quasi) are coming to Sacramento. On a Saturday night. When I’m in town. I don’t think they’ve ever played Sacramento proper.

I may hyperventilate.

1. I heard Every Night Is Friday Night at Justin Herman Plaza last summer and l.o.v.e.d. it from the start. I learned in the Forum the other day that it started out slower until someone suggested they try it like the Clash. Brilliant.

2. I made a 39 song Greatest Hits According to The Tams {me} for some friends the other day. Yes, 39. And yes, it was like choosing your favorite kid. I felt awful leaving some out. And yes, these two made the cut.

3. Timebomb is one of my absolute favorites, however it is met with bittersweetness knowing it is closing the show.

If you haven’t already gotten your tickets for tomorrow’s show, go do it now. The Old 97’s put on the best show you’ll ever go to. Plus then you can hear me singing along with every song.

PS – I still want to win this Meet and Greet with the band. Take me with you if you win?

2. This song kills me every time. The soul. The heartfelt lyrics. The puppy dog eyes. {sigh}

I do wish it had a better name.

Hot Burrito #1?

Hmmmm.

3. For the record, I would love to hear Old 97s cover this song when they play at Harlow’s June 4th. AND I would love to win this Meet and Greet with the band.

Yoga+Music {notquite365} Hitchhike to Rhome by Old 97’s – Recipe Edition!

It’s Tuesday Wednesday and that means the Recipe Edition!

+++++

Since our last go round with the Recipe Edition, I’ve been poked 32 times with potential allergens and *surprise*I’m highly allergic to 29! Granted most of these are what allergists refer to as “inhalant” – things in the air – which means I have really, really bad hay fever.

After much arm twisting and doctor doubts, also I was able to get tested for two specific foods – wheat and milk.

One of my new allergies is…. wait for it…. my beloved dairy.

So now I’m reading books with awesome titles like The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Dairy-Free Eating and The Everyday Dairy-Free Cookbook.

Today’s recipe is one I’ve been starting my day with.

+++++

Almond Honey Tea

adapted from The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Dairy-Free Eating

Ingredients

1/2 cup filtered water

1/2 almond milk {my favorite is Pacific Natural Foods}

1 TBS local, organic honey

1 black tea of your choice {totally loving earl grey and english breakfast these days}

Directions

1. water and almond milk into a small saucepan

2. high heat until almost boiling, remove from heat

3. add tea bag and steep 3-4 minutes

4. pour into mug, stir in honey

5. stop wishing alternative milks had the same texture as cow’s milk

Wednesday is the new Tuesday because Yoga+Music {notquite 365} is hitting your reader and in-boxes Wednesdays starting this week. Recipes are going to continue to be fast and healthy, however now they will have a new dairy-free slant. I’m still trying to figure this whole dairy-free living out, so I’ll be sharing what I’m learning.

Album recommendations (or at least what I’ve been listening to lately) will still be featured in this weekly post.

Yoga class updates can be found on Wednesdays and on the Yoga Class Schedule page.

If change isn’t your thing, not to worry friends! Fridays will still feature Song of the Day and the weekly show and tell Saturday Senses will still be posted Saturday mornings.

Thank you for your continued support! Be sure to click on the email subscription button in the top right corner so all the posts will be delivered to your inbox.

Song notes:

1.  So many Shins videos to choose from and I chose the basement acoustic version of this song – that’s how much I love it.

2.  This is unlike any other Shins song I’ve ever heard and it’s my favorite.

3.  Chutes Too Narrow is a go-to record for some seriously catchy pop.
