Spring Changes

Spring means that change is in the air, friends and with that there are some changes coming to TGBTS.

Monday is the new Sunday. The link love/best of the blogs I read feature In Case You Missed It Edition is moving to Mondays. It will still give you a weekly wrap up of articles and posts related to health, happiness, food, teaching, yoga and fashion.

Wednesday is the new Tuesday because Yoga+Music {notquite 365} is hitting your reader and in-boxes Wednesdays starting this week. Recipes are going to continue to be fast and healthy, however now they will have a new dairy-free slant. I’m still trying to figure this whole dairy-free living out, so I’ll be sharing what I’m learning.

Album recommendations (or at least what I’ve been listening to lately) will still be featured in this weekly post.

Yoga class updates can be found on Wednesdays and on the Yoga Class Schedule page.

If change isn’t your thing, not to worry friends! Fridays will still feature Song of the Day and the weekly show and tell Saturday Senses will still be posted Saturday mornings.

Thank you for your continued support! Be sure to click on the email subscription button in the top right corner so all the posts will be delivered to your inbox.

If you are on Facebook, you can “like” Teacher Goes Back to School and you’ll be privy to some FB exclusive content.

If you are on Twitter, stop by and say hi!

My Best Of…

8 Ways to Feel Happier During An Unhappy Time – is Gretchen Rubin some sort of psychic? After the week I’ve had, I do believe it’s true.

If you haven’t yet read The Happiness Project, please stop what you are doing and go get yourself a copy. I’m reading it a second time because it is full of super valuable reminders about how to take care of your own happiness.  It just came out in paperback this week. I bought a copy for a friend and I’m getting one for my birthday. Book club, anyone?

Do you treat yourself as well as you treat your friends and family? New research shows that self-compassion can lead to a healthier, happier you.

Have you met Sally at Already Pretty?  Her tagline: Helping You Recognize Your Own Beauty, One Post At A Time. Brilliant! Plus there is a new scarf tying tutorial – the pretzel.

Do you live in the Sacramento region? Are you needing a little quiet time for yourself and aren’t sure when, where and how to take it?

Well, I’ve got the answer!

First Sundays (that’s today, friends) I am teaching a fully restorative yoga class at It’s All Yoga. It’s called Sunday Snooze: 90 minutes of laying on the floor with blankets, bolsters, and blocks. It’s like a slumber party where I host and you actually get to rest. No undergarments in the freezer or awkward games of Truth or Dare. Just rest.

No experience or special clothes or even flexibility necessary. The ability to get down on the floor and up again is super helpful, however I’ll help if you need it.

If you’d like more information – check out my yoga classes page – or send me a message at TGBTSblog at gmail (dot) com.

Last little bit on rest… Do you know I have a Rest Manifesto? I don’t fool around when it comes to down time.

My Best Of…

What makes a great teacher? Hint, it’s not the cute pants. A seriously great post about what makes a great yoga teacher, but really the qualities apply to all kinds of teachers.

How NOT to teach a beginning level class. Again, it applies to all kinds of teaching, not just the yoga kind.

Remember how much you wanted to win a scarf from November’s Featured Teacher –  Alicia at Spirit House Designs? Well, she’s doing a purse GIVE AWAY. Go enter friends! You’ve got until March 12th.

EXCITING NEW ALERT!

Teacher Goes Back to School is growing up! In addition to our regularly scheduled fully restorative yoga class at It’s All Yoga, we are in search of a designer to make TGBTS as pretty as she is useful.

If you know someone or are someone who would like to work on this small-budget project, please send them my way via comment or email TGBTSblog (at) gmail dot com.

Speaking of pretty and useful blogs – have you checked out Charlotte’s Fancy? Love this victory garden post.

Yoga+Music {notquite365} The Best of The Flying Burrito Brothers – Recipe Edition!

It’s Tuesday and that means the Recipe Edition!

+++++

Oh February…. why can’t we be friends?

You seem like a good idea with your days off and quasi spring-like weather and yet, I find myself a bit grumpy and out of sorts.

Sigh.

This week I’ve been using up what is already in my refrigerator. My enthusiasm for all things new (ie new year adrenaline) is beginning to wane and I’m trying to figure out how to incorporate all these new food ideas I got from the cleanse into everyday life.

Here’s a tasty little something I put together with what was hanging out in my fridge.

+++++

Lentils with chickpeas, onion and quinoa

Ingredients

packet of steamed lentils from Trader Joe’s

1 15 oz can of chickpeas – rinsed

1 very thinly sliced onion

olive oil

garlic powder or garlic

1 tsp turmeric

1/2 tsp dried ginger

Optional:

crumbled bacon

Directions

1. Cook quinoa your preferred method.

2. Heat oil in pan and slowly cook onions until very soft.

3. Add steamed lentils, garlic, turmeric and chickpeas.

4. Heat through.

Serve over quinoa and top with crumbled bacon.

My Best Of…

Public workers’ rights are under attack in Wisconsin. Mrs. Ripp -one of my favorite teacher bloggers – lives in Wisconsin.

Here’s an excerpt from her post “I Am a Teacher” –

Teachers are not made in college, they become them in the classroom.  Teachers reach out to anyone that enters their worlds, and they impact every single aspect of this American life.  Support them, cherish them, and right now, fight for them and their rights. We are here to help America succeed and grow, not to take the blame.

What can we do?

Teacher, Music Executive and Yogi: An Interview with Jed Brewer Part 2

Teachers.

Don’t you just love them?

I know I do.

There are those that inspire me and those that make me laugh. Some help me solve problems in my classroom and others that help me solve problems in my life.

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite teachers here.

Teachers in studios, classrooms and in the world at large. These are the folks you will see featured in my new series of interviews here at Teacher Goes Back to School.

I hope you enjoy these teachers as much as I do!

+++++

Have you met Jed? He’s February’s Featured Teacher. Public school teacher by day and musician/executive by night. Oh and a yogi too!

And let’s not forget my husband.

Here’s Part 1.

When did you start practicing yoga?

I started yoga about 10 years ago.

Why did you start?

My wife {that’s me!} and a good friend wanted to attend a yoga class, so I went along.  I was dealing with stress from work and pains from playing baseball, so it seemed like a good idea.

Where did you practice?

The first few years I practiced at Midtown Athletic Club and my first instructor was Patricia.  She was a great first teacher from me, because she was really supportive and let you work within your abilities, while also correcting things that could be better.  I’ve also practiced at the YMCA, Pipeworks, and now It’s All Yoga.

How has your practice evolved over time?

There have been three main “yoga eras” for me.

The first few years were predominately Hatha.

The middle years were “California Flow,” with a lot of the pilates core elements going on.

The recent years have been more of a nuanced practice.  Part of that is because of elbow tendonitis and some especially stressful years at my previous school site.  You can’t do a lot of plank and push-ups when your elbow is screaming.  I’ve done enough of the Hatha Flow stuff to be able to do it on my own.  The things someone like Michelle Marlahan brings to the table, or yoga mat, are way more methodical and beneficial than your average American yoga class.

Do you have a home practice? What is it like? How often? Where? How’d you start and how do you keep at it?

My home practice ebbs and flows.  I tend to practice at home when I’ve had a scheduling conflict with whatever regular class I’m taking.  I tend to do favorite poses or poses that aren’t coming up much in my classes.

I usually practice in the kitchen.  It’s just the right size and the linoleum feels ok.  I usually turn off the lights and put on some drone music.  Sometimes I practice in front of the TV if the Giants are in the postseason and I don’t want to miss a pitch.  Obviously, I’m not really clearing my head this way, but I’m still getting the stretching.

I’ll occasionally bust out a knees to chest in the classroom if my back is hurting.  The students think it’s weird, but then one of them will have a sore back and I’ll be coaching them through the same pose.

What’s your favorite pose? Why?

I really like knees to chest.  It’s the one pose I do almost every day.  It’s been a real life saver.  I also like down dog.  When I first started, Patricia said that down dog was a resting pose and I thought she was absolutely mad, because it hurt my shoulders so much.  Now I get it though, and it doesn’t hurt.

What’s your least favorite pose?

That’s easy – head stand.  I just feel so vulnerable in the neck.  Patricia always used to say that you had your whole life to get a pose, so I actually like that there is something like head stand that I can chip away at.

What other blogs do your read? Why?

I don’t read a whole lot of blogs.  I read Heckasac because it tends to cover the culture stuff around midtown that interests me.  A few friends have blogs that I like such as Art For Spastics, Rabbits Against Magic, The Daily Jar, and of course, Teacher Goes Back to School.

I also like End Hits and Midtown Monthly.   In recent years I’ve sent my San Kazakgascar CDs to music blogs.  It took me awhile to even realize that is how most music is covered now.

Who and what inspires you?

I’m drawn to people that are smart, creative, and weird.  Occasionally, I need some boring down time to recover from everything, but I like watching, hearing, and talking to people that let it all hang out.  People that risk embarrassment or being misunderstood to do something that’s a little different.  Not the Jackass people, but creative or even political people.

I also get off on stuff from the natural world.  I’m fascinated by topography – land shapes, gorges, mountains, rivers, etc.  And animals, of course.  The Amazing Yans inspires me just about every day.

Teacher/President of Lather Records: An Interview with Jed Brewer

Teachers.

Don’t you just love them?

I know I do.

There are those that inspire me and those that make me laugh. Some help me solve problems in my classroom and others that help me solve problems in my life.

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite teachers here.

Jed Brewer is February’s Featured Teacher. Public school teacher by day and musician/executive by night. Oh and a yogi too!

Did I mention he totally rocks?

Lucky guy, he’s my husband too!

{Happy Valentine’s Day!}

What and where do you teach?

I teach 2nd grade at Theodore Judah in Sacramento by McKinley Park.

What is your teaching history?

My previous 11 years of full-time teaching was at Oak Ridge in Oak Park, Sacramento.  I taught mostly 4th grade, but also a little 3rd grade.  I also worked as a substitute for over 6 years during my “starving artist” period.  I subbed K-12.

Originally, I was going to sub for one year, but I was having such a good time with music that it lasted longer.  I learned a lot from subbing because you really have to have your classroom management together.  It’s never “your class.”  You also get to see how hundreds of teachers set up their classroom and what different grade levels are like – from elaborate 3rd grade rooms to lazy football coaches who “teach history.”

I discovered early on that I really like teaching diverse student populations.  You learn a lot from the kids and it’s great to see them take off and do great things once they have the opportunity and tools to do it.  I also like the feeling of contributing to the country/world.

What brought you to teaching?

It’s kind of cliché, but the excitement of learning is a big part of it.  There’s also the ego-feeding part of it.  You get to be up on stage and explain things.  Plus, all the opportunities to tell jokes and be a dork.  It’s such a hard job, if you’re not going to enjoy the fun parts, why even do it?  Kids are usually the best comedians, even when they’re not trying to be funny.

I hate the expression, “Those who can’t, teach.”  That said, I have met a few teachers that fall into that category.  I think some of us just wouldn’t feel right doing something corporate and being driven by the need to make more dough than the next guy.  It’s too bad that there is a corporate element to the current reform movement in education.  Some people just don’t get it.  They think teaching kids is the same as selling flat screen televisions.

Tell us about your blog

I just started the Lather Records blog a couple of months ago.  It’s mainly an easier way to update the news portion of Lather Records.  It’s not meant to be an everyday posting factory.  So far it’s been fun.  I just did my first non-Lather post about the Jandek show I went to.  I’ve been running my little coop label for around 20 years, and occasionally I do something like this to catch up with the times.

My Best Of…

Leave out Savasana and replace it with a sitting meditation?!?!? I have to admit I’m ready to start a revolution over the very thought! Madeleine brings it back to what it is all about – the letting go and preparation for the final rest in her post called You’re Dying! Now Try to Relax.

{Funny sidenote: once in a yoga class I was teaching, I referred to Corpse pose as “practicing for death” and the room went really, really quiet for a minute before everyone gave into fits of nervous giggles.}

In case you haven’t heard, we’re adopting from Thailand. We spent a month there in 2005 and I fell head over heals in love with Asian elephants: The freckles! The chubby cheeks! The ears shaped like India! Sarah at Yes and Yes just spent time in an elephant rescue camp in Chiang Mai – check out these enviable photos.

Just so we’re clear, I will be going there someday.

This next post has so much to love, I’m not even sure where to start. Becky (from The New Perfect) wrote about how her 9 year old daughter just got her first journalism job carrying the profession into the fourth generation in their family. What an accomplishment!

1.  Stop the presses: why didn’t you all insist I watch Romeo+Juliet before last weekend? Oh my. There was a whole lot of pretty going on there.

2.  Speaking of a whole lot of pretty, my eyes hurt because Nina Persson is so pretty.

3.  I may have to visit Sweden someday. So much pretty.

Even though the no sugar, dairy, soy, gluten, vinegars, and stimulants restriction has come to a close, I’m still interested in keeping a lot of the habits I picked up during the month.

Home-cooking a majority of meals from scratch, buying lots of vegetables at the farmer’s market (and actually eating them!) and trying new recipes using ingredients in ways I hadn’t ever thought to use together.

Today’s recipe fits into each of those categories.

It was easy, healthy and delicious.

Meet The Teacher

Brief school teacher bio:

By day, I teach third graders wacky stuff like multiplication, the love of reading, the art of being polite and how to write awesome blog posts. At night, I try to convince teachers to take care of themselves by blogging about my self-care journey and teaching them to lie down and rest awhile by taking a yoga nap.

I am a recovering Type-A political workaholic who used to smoke too much, drink too much and work way too many hours. The good news is I hated every minute of it and got out of it at the end of 2002 when I finally realized my teacher- husband’s schedule was way more fun than mine.

Becoming a teacher changed my life in every way. I’m happier, healthier and generally more fun to be around.

And now for the Q&A:

Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t a teacher?

A:   I’d be a financially independent yoga teacher/studio manager/world traveler/writer.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A:   Practicing and teaching yoga, meeting new friends via social media and the old-fashioned way, reading blogs and BOOKS, cooking, traveling, blogging and obsessing about old 97’s. And let’s not forget waiting. {In 2011, we became parents and our wait was over}.

Q: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: In 6th grade I gave a career day speech about wanting to be a lawyer to help people and a dancer because it would be fun. Even then, I couldn’t just pick one thing.

When I was 20, my college entrance essay talked about being a teacher after a life in politics. I guess, I was on to something.

Q: What are your guilty pleasures?

A: Pajama days, hot baths just because I’m cold, reading magazines at the library, pop music.

Q: What is your biggest fear?!

A: Parents yelling at me. I freaking hate that.

Q: When you’re on vacation, where do you like to go?

A: I like to vacation with friends, so wherever they are, I like to be. I am a huge fan of going bye-bye. Strange, because I am also a huge homebody.

Trips include (fake British) Spain, Munich, the South of France, Thailand, Laos. (See Teacher Travels for photos)

Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

A: Don’t live above your means, being desperate for money makes smart people do dumb things. Like go to jail. (Definitely more applicable in my last career).

Best teaching advice: Don’t take it personally.

Q: What do you value most in others?

A: Integrity. And a seriously dry sense of humor.

Q: If you could choose one of your personality traits to pass down to your kids, what would it be?

A: My seriously dry sense of humor.

Q: If you could have lunch with anyone in the world….living or dead…who would it be?

A: Without a doubt, Rhett Miller.

Adorbes, right?

Back in the olden days of me pretending to be someone cool or smart, I would have said J F Kennedy to try to earn some smartypants points. These days, I’m keeping my dorky, super fan girl cred by telling you the truth.

One random thing about me:

I read my very first blog in 2009 – AFTER I pressed the publish button on my first post. Until then, I was blissfully (ha!) unaware of all the genius out there just waiting to be discovered.

Monday marks the 100th day of school for me which means 80 more until summer break! J and I are already talking about taking a trip this summer to….. wait for it…… San Francisco!

We grew up across the Bay from the City and now even though we live within 2 hours, we’ve never spent a proper holiday there. When we travel to SF, we do our thing and return either to the East Bay for a slumber party with friends or overnight with his mom or drive all the way back to Sacramento to sleep in our own bed.

Not this time! We’ve decided it is time to take the plunge and stay a few days in The City and play tourist.

Cleanse update:  It’s OVER!

Please don’t think I am going to return to my earlier ways. At least not all of them – I feel too good to go back now. I learned a lot this month:

I am, indeed, gluten intolerant.  Rice substitutes are quite delicious and fairly easily available so I’ll keep those.

Dairy has been on my mind for a month and I am hoping to have a smooth reintroduction. Visions of gulping a gallon of milk while holding a fist full of cheese have been dancing around in my head for a while, but I think I’ll take it slow. I would hate to over do it.

Cleanse-worthy dishes are quite delicious. All it takes it some planning, shopping, chopping and applying heat before you eat. Keeping in mind this is an act of self-care/love will help keep that in perspective.

My Best Of…

Teaching Simplicity got it right with Nurturing the Nurturer – teachers take note. Take the time to take care of yourself. Of course, we need to take care of ourselves when we’re sick but wouldn’t it be nice to nurture and nourish ourselves so we don’t get sick?

Another reason to get more zzzzzzzs…. to look prettier! It’s scientific.

Cleanse update:  a cold takes away a lot of desire to cook nourishing food. I really wanted someone to cook for me.

So I ate out.

Twice.

I didn’t follow all the rules, however I didn’t give in to all my comfort food throw backs either. I wanted a cheeseburger (I know, huh?). Instead I had a burger sans cheese. I ate some of the bread and threw the rest away.

The next day I went to a pot luck and skipped the dessert and soda table – my usual favorites.

The bowl of M&M’s sitting right in front of me didn’t go untouched, however after I realized I was eating sweets (the cold medicine made me really, r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w), I hid them behind the centerpiece on the table and promptly forgot about them.

Baby steps.

Things I have noticed: comfort food isn’t just about the food when I am sick, it’s also about someone else cooking. Processed foods are convenient, but don’t taste nearly as good as not processed foods. My cold isn’t nearly as devastating as ones I’ve suffered from in recent years. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Yoga+Music {notquite365} – The Instigator by Rhett Miller – Recipe Edition!

It’s Tuesday and that means the Recipe Edition!

+++++

As you may know, I am giving up sugar, dairy, soy, gluten, vinegars, and stimulants for the rest of January.

Well, as much as I can without driving myself completely crazy.

The first week wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The cravings weren’t as strong and the lack of caffeine was not as noticeable as I feared. Please keep in mind I was still using up some dairy products {milk and yogurt}, so it hasn’t been completely bleak around here. However, I did manage to give up caffeine, added sugars, {most} cheese, bread and regular pasta.  Big steps if you ask me!

Which brings me to this week’s recipe inspired by Sarah at Pink of Perfection. She’s doing a detox diet this month too, so she’s got some great healthy recipes.

When I read Sarah’s post this week I decided it was time I try spaghetti squash with meatballs. {Click over to Sarah’s page for the recipe basics.}

I’d never made spaghetti squash so I decided to enlist the help of my friend Tari who can pretty much make anything tasty or beautiful. {She’s fancy like that}.

We made some modifications to Sarah’s recipe. Instead of steaming the squash in the microwave, I painted on garlic powder, salt, pepper and olive oil on the quartered, seeded spaghetti squash. I popped into a 375 degree oven for 45 minutes or so. It smelled absolutely divine while it was roasting!

After the squash came out of the oven, we let it cool before we started shredding it into the spaghetti.

Tari was in charge of the meatballs. They are diced button mushrooms,  finely diced roasted red peppers, grated onion, sautéed in olive oil. Cool the mushroom mixture before you add it to the uncooked meat.

She added the mushroom mixture to organic beef, spicy Italian pork sausage, ground up oat meal, egg and spices together and rolled them into meatballs.

We baked the meatballs in the oven until browned and then stirred them into marinara sauce and let it simmer for a while.

Here’s the final product.

{don’t tell anyone I put a fine sprinkling of parmesan cheese on top}.

My Best Of…

Have you read the WSJ article (via The New Perfect) on Amy Chua’s new parenting memoir, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother? It has clearly touched a nerve, more than 6,000 comments so far and has started a firestorm of articles and blog posts.

I found the article shocking, yet intriguing. I don’t agree with a lot of what she says and does (quite frankly I’m a little afraid of her), however I do agree kids could benefit from more practice and focus on learning. There has to be a middle place.

What do you think?

Do you think she goes too far or is she just helping her kids succeed?

I don’t know about you, but there was a time in my life when I believed that if something didn’t fit there was something wrong with my body. I was too fat and completely misshapen. I would feel horrible about myself and quite honestly ususally console myself with food.

Somehow I finally got over that (I think it’s a combination of getting older and all the yoga). When I saw this post from The Connection Revolution, I wanted to cheer.

+++++

Cleanse update: It’s been a quite a week of learning. Boy, there are a lot of opportunities to eat not-so-good-for-you foods. I was able to resist most and have found support within the bigger group.

Some things I noticed: I don’t miss sweets as much as I thought I would, I am fantasizing about eating yogurt (pretty sure this means I still love dairy), I am feeling remarkably more alert and have lost an inch from my waist – that wheat allergy is the real deal.

Someone asked me why I am doing this cleanse and the best answer I could come up with is I’m tired of being sick so much. Between the 4-5 colds a year and the horrible hay fever I feel like crap most of the year.

If I can feed myself differently and feel better, I am in.

Check out this post from Gluten Free Girl – it’s long, so if you want the part I really like go down to the “Food Lovers’ Cleanse” section.
