Yoga+Music {notquite365} – (What’s The Story) Morning Glory by Oasis — Recipe Edition!

It’s Tuesday and that means the Recipe Edition!

+++++

For the rest of January I am giving up sugar, dairy, soy, gluten, vinegars, and stimulants. Or at least I’m going to try.

Why am I doing this you ask?

I am looking at it as an act of self-care. I’m curious to see if my overall health will improve. I want to know if what I am eating contributes to my really bad hay fever and how I seem to catch every bug that comes in my classroom.

Partly I’m curious if I can.

I’m having a really hard time imagining my life without dairy. My love of France grew because of their 500 + cheeses. {sigh}

Changing how I eat this month is also an exercise in mindful eating. With all the restrictions, I’m going to have to really think about what I am putting in my mouth.

This month’s recipes will be free from sugar, dairy, soy, gluten, vinegars, and stimulants and will be new to me.

Even though this cleanse is totally optional, I will be complaining. Consider yourself warned.

My Best Of…

Happy New Year!

It’s hard to believe I started this recipe tradition a year ago. Sharing recipes has definitely kept me on the lookout for new favorites to pass on to you. It’s nice to have a reason to get out of a cooking rut and to also to archive my favorite recipes!

So thank you, dear readers.

It’s hard for me to explain just how much I love winter food.

It’s warm, filling and comforting and nothing makes me feel better than knowing I’ve got some stew-y/casserole-y/chili-type thing made and ready to heat up for a quick lunch or dinner. Especially during the busy weeks just after a break.

Today’s recipe is from Small Changes Big Results: A 12-Week Action Plan to A Better Life by Ellie Krieger.

White Chili

Serves 6

Ingredients

2 TBS olive oil

1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized chunks

1 large onion, diced

3 garlic cloves

2 4-oz cans of chopped mild green chilis, undrained

1/2 cup tomatillo salsa (salsa verde)

1 14 oz can of low-sodium chicken broth

1/4 tsp ground cumin

1/2 tsp dried oregano

2 16 oz cans of white beans – drained and rinsed {I used 1 white and 1 red kidney beans}

3 TBS lime juice {I’ve never remembered to add this juice}

+++++

Optional toppings:

1/2 cup cilantro, chopped

1 cup plain yogurt

1/2 shredded cheddar

Directions

1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high flame. Add chicken and sauté until cooked through. Remove from pan and set aside.

2. Add the remaining oil and onion – sauté until onion is tender (about 3 minutes).

3. Add garlic and sauté for 1 more minute.

4. Add chilis, salsa, chicken broth, cumin, and oregano – bring to boil – reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes.

5. Add chicken and beans – cook 5 minutes more. Stir in lime juice.

Serve.

Yoga+Music {notquite365} – Crazy: The Demo Sessions by Willie Nelson – Recipe Edition!

It’s Tuesday and that means the Recipe Edition!

+++++

Happy 1st day of Winter!

We’ve been experiencing our version of Northern California winter with promises of relentless rain showers only to be slightly disappointed when they are intermittent at best.

But still, nothing says Winter Break like making soup and hunkering down on the couch with the Google Reader while it simmers on the stove. Plus, it helps with my lame food confession and in my quest for staying healthy during the winter so I can get out and have some fun over break.

Today’s recipe is from Regina’s Vegetarian Table

Old-Fashioned Vegetable Soup

Serves 8-10

Ingredients

1 large onion, diced

3 carrots, peeled and diced {I’m not a peeler. Way too lazy for that nuttiness}.

2 potatoes, peeled and diced {See above}.

3 stalks celery, sliced

1/2 head cabbage, chopped

1 can (28 oz) tomatoes {I use Muir Glen Organic Fire Roasted – roasting makes tomatoes even more delish}

1 can (16 oz) pinto beans

1 can (15 oz) corn {I use organic frozen sweet corn instead}

1/4 cup extra virgin oil oil

pepper

dash of cayenne (optional)

2 quarts water {I use 1 quart filtered water and 1 quart organic free range chicken broth}

salt

Directions

1. In a large pot, saute onion in a little oil until slightly tender

2. Add remaining ingredients except salt. Simmer for at least 3 hours uncovered. Add salt and oil before serving.

How easy is that?

Additional ingredients

I also add cooked pasta, cooked chicken and some parmesan cheese. Toasted crusty bread makes for a comforting healthy meal.

MadYoga Goes Online! Part 2 – Madeleine Lohman Interview

Teachers.

Don’t you just love them?

I know I do.

There are those that inspire me and those that make me laugh. Some help me solve problems in my classroom and others that help me solve problems in my life.

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite teachers here.

Teachers in studios, classrooms and in the world at large. These are the folks you will see featured in my new series of interviews here at Teacher Goes Back to School.

I hope you enjoy these teachers as much as I do!

Have you met Madeleine Lohman yet? Click here for Part 1.

When did you start blogging? Why?

I started blogging really recently, and I did it because you told me to.

This is only a slight exaggeration.

I have lots of these smart friends who write consistently amazing and inspiring blogs and I have been incredibly reluctant to get on board.

Even though I have a lot of extrovert skills, I am at heart an introvert, and had a complex network of reasons why blogging would Not Be A Good Idea. But, through the gentle, persistent reassurance of people like you who insisted they would like to hear what I had to say, I got it over with, and I now love it.

In fact, I’ve signed on for #reverb10, pledging to write every day in December based on prompts regarding the year past and the year to come. Baptism with fire.

What is your blog about?

I call it the yoga of the day-to-day. Making a habit of taking the lessons from your mat and bringing them regularly into your daily life. And not just into the quiet moments of your life, but the hard and loud and uncomfortable ones. What Pema Chodron refers to as the “squeeze” – when you’re least likely to think of yoga, that’s when you need it.

Didn’t you recently guest post over at Bows and Sparrows?

I did.

Here’s the link to the Holiday Gift Guide for the Yogi.

What blogs do you read?

Well, besides yours, duh…

Kim at www.yogaquest.wordpress.com – yoga!

Havi at www.thefluentself.com – mindful biggification!

Michelle at www.blogasana.wordpress.com – although I hear this is changing…

Who and what inspires you?

People who handle adversity with grace.

My incredible students.

The change of the seasons.

My dog when he realizes we are, in fact, going for a walk.

Trying Technology

December 18 – Try

What do you want to try next year? Is there something you wanted to try in 2010? What happened when you did / didn’t go for it?

+++++

2011

I want to try to use technology better next year. I’ve already committed to learning to use Skype over my winter break and have already lined up some people to help me figure it out.

What is your favorite can’t-live-without-it technology? What makes your life easier/more fun/productive?

Please note: NOTHING is too obvious. I practically have a stone tablet on my lap for getting these posts out. {Just sayin’ – I may be one of the models in the photo}.

Please share what you love and why you love it. Maybe you’ll convince me to try your favorite.

+++++

2010

This year I wanted to try teaching yoga.

What happened?

At first, I totally freaked out.

Then I got a grip and I loved it.

I am so grateful for Michelle’s February Recess and her faith in my teaching.

I’m also glad I didn’t quit because I was afraid.

Teaching yoga has taught me things I wouldn’t have ever known otherwise.

So grateful.

What did you try this year? How did it turn out?

MadYoga Debuts: An Interview with Madeleine Lohman

+++++

I’m so excited for this month’s interview!

Have you met Madeleine yet?

Love her.

Madeleine Lohman is December’s Featured Teacher. She teaches Yoga Basics, Gentle and Level 1-2 yoga at It’s All Yoga and she is also part of the IAY Teacher Training faculty. Plus she does massage and private yoga sessions/parties.

Did I mention she also totally rocks?

When did you start practicing yoga? Why?

Sometime in the late-mid nineties, I returned to Seattle after going to school in Montreal. I had my degree in English Literature which naturally led me to work at a toy store. (The coolest toy store ever, Archie Mcphee, but that’s another story…)

I had free time and brain space on my hands, and needed something new to think about. My friend was taking classes at a community center, so I went along.

It was a beginner’s class, but an accelerated one intended for folks who were already “in shape.” I don’t know what led me to believe that described me. I’ll never forget the teacher kneeling beside me trying to encourage me to roll back into plough pose. All my efforts produced almost no movement, only grunting.

I do remember that I did my first handstand in that class. I actually cried out: “Jeezus!!!”

The teacher didn’t find it funny.

How has your yoga practice evolved over time?

It has definitely moved out of the realm of competition and into the realm of kindness. It took a long time. It’s still happening.

I mean, I was never going to be a super-power-vinyasa yogi, but that doesn’t mean I couldn’t mistake yoga as just another way to “improve” my body.

Old habits die hard.

When you spend your teen years dieting and exercising in a punishing way, yoga can quite neatly fit into that regimen. Yoga can either change your bad habits or just give you another tool to cement them with.

Now, the asanas (poses) are a way to lavish attention on this body just as it is. And to make meditation, breathing, and just generally living a little easier.

How long have you been a yoga teacher?

Since 2003 or so. My first certification, ironically enough, was through “YogaFit.” They do trainings which take place over one weekend, which certainly opens them up to a lot of criticism in the yoga community.

And no, you can’t learn to be a yoga teacher in a weekend.

But it’s a very useful starting point for students like me, who were being nudged in the direction of teaching by a lot of sources, but were afraid of the full, Yoga Alliance approved, hundreds of hours type of commitment. It lets you know if you’re moving in the right direction.

And then I felt ready to jump in to the hundreds of hours of training I’ve done since then, knowing I liked what I was experiencing.

Truly, though, the only thing that prepares you for teaching is teaching.

Lots of it. As much as you can. Especially, when you’re starting out, offering your teaching freely to groups that might not ordinarily have access to the practice.

Do you have a home practice? What’s it like?

I believe if you don’t have a consistent home practice, you got nothing to teach.

My home practice finally started because it had to, it was a requirement of my second teacher training. There’s nothing like having to turn in a report that makes you get your practice in gear.

Since then, it’s faltered now and then, but for the most part, that’s how I teach, by making sure I practice and then teaching what I’ve found.

After confidently telling students for years that it’s more beneficial to have a shorter home practice that’s more frequent, I’ve completely changed my mind.

I do practice every morning, but by that I mean a sitting meditation and some very simple stretching.

In terms of the whiz-bang, full-on, get-down-on-it asana practice, I do that Monday/Wednesday/Friday, because I’m regimented like that. I discovered that shorter asana practices every day made me feel like I was reading a bunch of short stories, when what I wanted was to read a novel.

For me, taking a class definitely does not take the place of a home practice. Home practice is the work, class is the vacation. And as anyone who’s read my blog knows, I have a little trouble taking enough vacations.

Favorite pose?

Everyone gets a free pass or two in yoga, the poses and body parts that generally give you no complaints and are a lot of fun to wallow in. For me, that’s hips and hamstrings. So, give me a forward fold or a pigeon and I’m happy. The one pose I do every day, though, is downward dog.

Least favorite pose?

I’m not sure what you would call the opposite of your “free pass” – but for me it’s anything that requires upper body flexibility or strength. Chaturanga is the first that comes to mind, but any pose where you bind your arms (clasping hands together in a complicated way behind your torso) will find me cursing and looking for a strap.

11 Things For 2011

December 11th’s Prompt:

What are 11 things your life doesn’t need in 2011?

How will you go about eliminating them?

How will getting rid of these 11 things change your life?

+++++

1. Cable TV. One phone call and we’re free! Or at least that’s how I hope it works.

How will it change my life? Saving money and not falling into the I’ll-just-turn-it-on-for-a-minute trap.

2. My subscription to Yoga Journal. Just letting it run its course.

How will it change my life? I’ll get my yoga writing from blogs like Michelle’s, Madeleine’s, Kim’s… and I’ll stop wondering why I keep subscribing to a magazine I don’t have much in common with.

3. More books and clothes – can’t wait until the next swaps.

How will it change my life? Saving a ton of money on new-to-me clothes and books and I’ve got an outlet for my stuff I no longer need. Spring SwapAsana anyone?

4. Sugar, dairy and bread { just for a month!}

How will it change my life? I’m not sure other than I’ll have to be more mindful about what I am eating. Want to join me? {then click workshops}

5. Screen time after 8:30 pm – a girl has got to read books.

How will it change my life? I’ll sleep better and get through my huge stack of library books faster.

6. Clutter10 things at a time.

How will it change my life? Getting rid of stuff I don’t need will make room for what I do. Plus knowing I don’t have to do it all at once will take the overwhelm out of the job.

7. Signing up for e-courses – I think I’ll finish 2010’s.

How will it change my life? Less guilt about spending and not using.

8. My sedentary ways. Consistent cardio here I come!

How will it change my life? It will help keep moodiness at bay and maybe even help my trousers fit better.

9. Taking it personally. {A 2010 resolution that needs repeating. –Daily.}

How will it change my life? I won’t be so shaken and stirred by other people’s opinions of me.

10. Guilt about housecleaning – we’ve asked for help.

How will it change my life? More time to focus on projects and fun.

11. Waiting.

How will it change my life? How won’t it?

Wise Words To Live By

December 10th’s Prompt: Wisdom.

What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out?

+++++

Work: Not taking it personally was my new school year resolution.

How is it playing out so far?

I am listening more and talking less. I am happy to report I am suffering much less wanting thing to be different than they are.

+++++

Life: I’ve also been paying attention to the details more.

Here are some examples of some hidden treasures around Sacramento this afternoon.

Mrs. PartyPants

December 9th’s Prompt:

Party. What social gathering rocked your socks off in 2010? Describe the people, music, food, drink, clothes, shenanigans.

+++++

In March, I turned 40.

To celebrate some of my yoga teacher training buddies and I went on a yoga workshop weekend in Ukiah to study Balance with Mary Paffard.

I know. We know how to party!

A must stop if you are ever in Clear Lake

Once we were primed and ready (ie totally full of fried goodies) we off to Vichy Springs Resort for some soaking in the mineral pools.

An excellent way to spend an afternoon

Post soak, we hopped on down the road to meet the other YTTs for dinner at Oco Time.

Look at those lovely faces.

We chatted, we laughed, we snapped photos and drank a beer (or two).

More lovely faces.

We told jokes and talked about birthdays, age and yoga.

And then it was over.

+++++

It’s funny what a difference a decade makes.

My 30th birthday was a huge drunken bash.

I’m glad that nonsense is over now.

What’s your most memorable party this year?

My Best Of…

Why wait for Teacher Appreciation Day to feel some love?

Mrs. Ripp is at it again. Last week she asked if teaching is a lonely profession and this week she is asking for teachers to notice what is going well with other teachers in their classrooms.

I’ll admit it, sometimes I find teaching to be a pretty thankless profession. I think the simple act of noticing others would help set the intention of gratitude and good will. I’m intrigued by the practice of noticing the positive and acknowledging someone else’s good work.

What do you think?

+++++

This time of year brings up a lot of sadness for lots of people (including me). Between the darkness, gloomy weather, and holiday expectations people struggle. The theme of letting go what no longer works is one many of my favorite bloggers are talking about this week.

Hollee’s hip release and subsequent surrender to the unknown is inspiring.

Do you ever want to let go of what isn’t working (or decluttering your life), but get overwhelmed by the thought?

Havi has simplified and taken the scary and overwhelm out of decluttering with 10 Things Gone.

What Makes Me Beautiful

Prompt: Beautifully different. Think about what makes you different and what you do that lights people up. Reflect on all the things that make you different – you’ll find they’re what make you beautiful.

+++++

I can’t help, but tell the truth.

Some say I am too direct.

Sometimes I have no tact, but everyone knows where they stand.

I can break complex ideas into simple language.

I am fiercely loyal.

I see the good in people.

I tend to point about the absurdity of the obvious.

Community – A Twitter Love Letter

Prompt: Community. Where have you discovered community, online or otherwise, in 2010? What community would you like to join, create or more deeply connect with in 2011?

{via}

Dear Twitter,

I know we met in 2009, but it wasn’t really until 2010 that we solidified our relationship. I used to be a little embarrassed how much I loved reading tweets and finding out how people spend their time. I think it is because I was still trying to figure you out.

I just didn’t get how useful people on Twitter can be. Questions about WordPress, online polls, browsers or blogging with kids? Ask and multiple answers come quickly.

Need help planning a yoga class? All you have to do is ask.

Want to trade stories about rock shows and cute rock stars? Twitter is the place to do it.

Thanks for the great year!

Love,
Tams

PS – In 2011, I’d like to meet more teachers committed to self-care and time-wasting practices like yoga, reading for pleasure and goofing off on social media.
Do you know any?

Where are your people? Who do you want to connect with next year?

Loosening The White-Knuckled Grip and Finding A Little More Peace Along The Way

Prompt: Let Go. What (or whom) did you let go of this year? Why?

+++++

A short list of what I’ve let go of this year:

My ego.

Matt.

My regularly scheduled life.

Why did I let go so much?

It just wasn’t working anymore.

Or ever, really.

To be honest, I was tired.

Tired of fighting every single battle in the world. I was tired of the constant struggle of trying to be in control. I was tired of learning the same lessons -over and over again.

The experience of loosening up my grip on everything has been nothing short of revolutionary. I feel lighter and less anxious. My connections are more heart felt and to be honest, scary. I feel vulnerable. Not in the oh-my-god it’s so scary way, but in the let’s try it this way and wow the level of kindness is awe inspiring.

Wonder: Who Are You When You Are Perfectly Still?

Prompt: How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year?

+++++

Recently at a yoga+writing workshop we were asked to answer the following question:

Who are you when you are perfectly still?

We were asked to a write a word at the end of the page and write a story that leads to the word.

See if you can guess my word.

+++++

Once there was a little kid, who despite being quite bright, had some trouble at school.

The bright student just would not do the work.

Quietly sitting, not participating, not following along.

Just sitting.

It turns out this kid had other things on the brain. Big issues at home no one at school knew the depth of.

See, the grown ups in this kid’s life were fuck-ups. They didn’t know what to do or how to help or even to acknowledge that they, themselves were the cause of the issues of the kid.

The girl, she did what ever necessary to be “good.”

But the boy, he acted out.

No one knew how to help them.

She suffered silently while he cried out for help.

+++++

So who are you when you are perfectly still?

Curious about #Reverb10?

Profound Moment – Paying Attention to the Details

Prompt: Moment. Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, colors).

My first instinct when approaching this prompt was to retell the stories of the really hard parts of my year. If you’d like to read about them you can – here and here. Oh sadness, why are you so vivid?

My next instinct was to get all “yoga” on you and say something like,<insert breathy voice here> “every moment I feel alive”  – because I’m just that good at being in the moment.

Ha!

Then I wanted to punch myself for being so pretentious and figured that wasn’t the direction this post would take if I wanted to keep my readers.

So I’ll talk about something that has made me all misty-eyed and proud.

Drum roll, please….

I noticed – on several different occasions – the trees changing color.

What the big effing deal about that?

For starters, just about every tree in Sacramento changes from green to Technicolor yellow, orange, red. It is like an explosion of color and so different from the evergreen trees around where I grew up. You would pretty much have to be blind not to notice.

And until last fall (during yoga teacher training), I didn’t ever notice the beauty.

How can that be you ask?

Usually I’m stuck in my head and mired in how to get from here to there or how to get this group of people to do what I want them to do when I want them to do it and for them to think it was their idea – instead of paying attention to the details of life around me.

Not this year.

This year, I am paying attention to those damn leaves.

I’ve even picked out my favorite trees – they are twins.

They live across the street on the corner a couple of blocks down the street from me.

I found out recently they are ginkgo biloba trees. They are at least 10 feet tall, slender and right now have bright yellow flower petal shaped leaves covering them.

There is also a pile of leaves on the sidewalk and street. I’m hoping to see the flurry of leaves falling when the wind kicks in.

I hope I don’t miss it.

Why do these leaves make me so heart-swelling happy?

Because I am finally noticing the little details of life. I think they call it living in the moment. I have heard this is where the peace and the happiness live.

+++++

Has there been a moment that took your breath away this year?
